With the economy the way it is today, I decided that it would be a good idea to make a list of restaurants, delis, and even some dives in and around my hometown that are known for good and inexpensive food. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you various eateries where you can get a good deal when staying in or passing through Kansas City.
I am going to start with LaSala's Deli at 910 E 5th St. Kansas City MO 64106
LaSala's has been in this location since the 1920's. It is situated in the old Italian neighborhood of Columbus Park just northeast of Downtown Kansas City. Originally a local grocery and meat market that originally made the sandwiches as a freebie for their customers, they were too small to become a supermarket. So, sometime in the late 60's or early 70's they dropped the groceries and concentrated on selling the sandwiches that they were known for. Located 8 blocks east of the City Market, they catered to the tradesmen that worked in the River Bottoms. They are open from 8:30am to 3:00pm Monday thru Friday so that their blue-collar customers can pick up a sandwich for lunch on the way to work or the jobsite.
As you can see from the menu the prices are very reasonable. In addition to sandwiches they also have a traditional pasta dishes.
This sandwich is one-half of a half-loaf supreme cut lengthwise. As you can see the sandwich is constructed on a substantial piece of bread from the Roma Bakery here in Kansas City. The outside is crusty and the inside is dense and chewy, perfect for a sandwich that might not be consumed for several hours and is approximately 12" x 5". The meats and cheeses on all their sandwiches are piled this high and come dressed the way you want it. The meats are all of excellent quality whether you order the Poor Boy which has the least expensive meats, the Rich Boy that has the more expensive meats, or the Supreme that has Italian Style meats. If you are passing through Kansas City and have too grab a quick bite there are a few tables inside and some tables outside for when the weather is nice or if you smoke (Kansas City went non-smoking last year). These sandwiches travel well, so even if it is too early for lunch as you pass through grab a sandwich, a bottle of Vess soda, and maybe a bag of Chips and eat lunch at a Rest Stop or Roadside Park.
