Cheap countertop material? Wed, 03/7/12 7:50 AM (permalink)
Hi guys, so I'm almost finished building my cart.  Didn't buy any plans but did everythign on my own, I'll post pics soon.  But one thing I'm having a problem finding is a countertop material for the top.  They have HUGE 8x10 sheets of laminate countertop at Home Depot that cost at least $50 a sheet.  That's expensive and way too much for me.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on cheap countertop material and where to find it?

In either Home Depot or Lowes, in the section where the 4x8 sheets of paneling, tile board & FRP is kept, you should be able to find a very flexible vinyl that is about the thickness of horizontal laminate. It was about $20 last time we looked at it. Also, you can get FRP in a smooth finish ( often special order). I don't know the product name but I think it was Lowes who had it.

What is the size of your cart top? That info may help us give idea's.
You should be able to find laminate sheets 30" wide by different lengths,  in basic colors at Menards ,Lowes, Home Depot. My local Menards has them starting at $13 a sheet.

Menards has a smaller size here in Illinois also, but the original poster is in Massachusetts and the closest Menards to him is in Massillon (Canton), Ohio.

6star I know the poster is in Mass... Didn't know how far Menards went East though, but that is why I added Lowes and Home Depot should have close to the same also. Could also look at local cabinet and counter builders. They maybe able to help.

Do you have to have anything special for the top? Is this a health dept regulation you need to abide by? I'm basically done with my cart and I just used luan plywood and put several coats of white paint on it and it looks great. I don't plan on cutting on it though...

The top of my cart is a little over 48 in wide and maybe 5 ft long.  I'm looking for a 5x5 or 6x6 piece to cut down to size.

I thought about using this plywood with a finished side but feel a countertop would give me a nice, clean look and also be easy for clean-up.

I will check Lowe's today.  I'm getting to the point that I may have to bite the bullet and buy one of the large sheets for $50/$60 :/

Hey, there djdawg. I don't know about Seattle, but here in Maricopa County AZ, the HD requires either Stainless Steel or another NSF approved material for the top - they will not allow wood. I'm having a fabricator make our top out of Stainless Steel. I wish I would have known that FRP comes in a smooth finish as well...I would have used that.
