Out here in CA, I can sometimes find these: http://quakermaidmeats.com/pg/pgsteakpatty.html As for the cheese controversy, I grew up in Philly, and one with Provolone (at Jim's, and years ago, at Larry's in Overbrook Park) was always my choice. Also at White House Subs or Sacko Subs in Atlantic City... The amazing thing to me now is that in my youth, just about any small luncheonette served up a good cheesesteak in Philly - I think it IS the water, in the bread. One with Cheese Wiz is fine, especially if you have a sense of tradition...

I get them here in Baltimore that way, as well as pork sliced the same way. They are sliced for stir fry & work great for steak sandwhiches or in gravy for hot beef

I've made both BBQ beef and cheesesteaks with them and they work superbly, especially the sliced ribeye.

Hey everyone, I'll report on Chick's next week after they reopen from vaction. My boys should be an excellent barometer! I just might order the chicken cheesesteak myself, but they'll definitely get the beef!

Last Saturday (8/16), my daughter & I were schlepping two huge trashbags of old and too-big clothing to Goodwill in Pennsauken, and decided to stop at Chick's. Should have called first. I thought that alley/lot looked too empty! "Closed till August 25" (tomorrow) I believe it read. Crud. At the same time we pulled in, a vehicle with an Alabama plate pulled in. Say, was that anyone from this board? Just wondering! At the same time the Alabama-plate person said, "Yeah, thought it was too easy to get a space", a local (for Cherry Hill, which is a huge township) woman went sauntering down the alley (literally!), and said to us, "Yeah, they're closed every year at this time". And we should have known this, but I'm on the OTHER side of Camden County (my excuse). A colleague at work lives in that part of Cherry Hill (Erlton) and said their food is really, really good. They serve no french fries; you pick up a bag of potato chips at the counter. By the way we ended up at Kaminski's. Their wings are really good and we had roast pork sandwiches too, but that's another thread. I'm on vacation until my daughter goes back to school on the 2nd (a sophomore?? Tell me it ain't so!!), and we're going to Tilghman Island, MD, on Tuesday, but I'll look for any reviews on Chick's from the great posters on this board, either tomorrow if I have time to get online, or when we return.

Shayna's Mom, I checked your profile to see where you live, as everything you mention is so familiar & discovered we live in the same town. I guess it really is "a small world after all" (taken from that annoying song at Disneyworld) Nancy P.S. Do you ever go to Victory Lane in Berlin?

Now I know for sure, Chick's does make the best cheesesteaks & chicken cheesesteaks. We picked our dinner up tonight & ate at home. They were amazing... Thank you, Chick's...

When I attended the University of Hawaii, the most popular pizza joint was a place called Anna Bananas. The most popular pie on the menu was peanut butter and pineapple. What's that, you say? Creamy of course. For years after I returned to the mainland, I carried jars of pb into the pizza places in San Diego. --give me a guy who orders ham and pinapple on his pizza because he LIKES it even if i do think hes NUTS!! Hey now! Watch out! I happen to LIKE ham and pineapple on pizza.

Lone Star, If this is any consolation, I saw John Kerry on TV last night and he looked absolutely TERRIBLE..........I think a result of having eaten SWISS on his cheesesteak.

FYI, Chick's closes @ 6 & their grill shuts down at 5, or so they say. We got there shortly before 5, but people were still ordering after 5. I guess it's more of a lunch/late afternoon spot.

Just tuned into this conversation and have to add my two cents. Years ago we used to get incredible cheese steaks in Rose Tree (Delaware County burbs). I think the place is gone now. I became convinced that the secret to truly great cheesesteaks was the grill, not the water. You must never clean the grill. Years of accumulated steak and onion residue are what make the difference. Home cooked cheesesteaks just can't compare with the real things, no matter how many "extras" you pile on. Incidentally, while in Phoenix one time, I went to the Philly Cheesesteak for a taste of heaven but realized I'd made a big mistake when the clerk asked if I wanted mayonnaise and tomato on my steak. Swiss cheese maybe but never mayonnaise. :)

Just got back from Tilghman Island, MD a few days ago (where steamed crabs would have cost me my rent payment, but that's another thread), but went to Chick's on Monday, the 25th. It was packed, line almost out the door and 99% male clientele at that particular time. From white shirts and ties to construction. Very good! We sat at the wall counter, I guess you could call it, so we could watch the guys at the grill. The place is tiny. It reminded me of growing up in Northeast Philly. We just had plain cheesesteaks with extra cheese, and my daughter had mushrooms on hers. They put American on ours and it was just fine that way. Don't need to get fancy with the cheese if it's a good cheesesteak, IMO. Two bags of chips and some Diet Snapple. It actually came to about $15.00. Yes, Chick's is all that! The roll was absolutely the freshest type of steak roll, the way it should be. Loved it and will go back again. PS! I can scan a menu if anyone wants one sent to them. Please email me if interested, with Chick's Menu as the subject. I actually save menus in an expandable folder. Hey, NancyPeter: I've never gone to Victory Lane in Berlin. I used to go when it was the Embers, but only to watch my ex and his pool team, 5 years ago. It was a flocked wallpaper kind of place then, just a bar. I thought it looked hokey when they rebuilt it into Victory Lane, so just couldn't have been bothered. Is it any good? We can actually walk to Main Street Pub, to give you an idea of proximity, though.

Glad you agreed about Chick's. I am no expert, as I'm a North Jersey girl. However, I LOVED my chicken cheesesteak! Shayna's Mom, wow, we live about three minutes from the Main Street Pub--do you go there often? Actually, we prefer Victory Lane, as the pub is always so smokey. The food at V/L is good and the portions are large. I always take home at least half of my entree. Their specials are great & the regular menu has something for everyone. It's not gourmet, but then again, this is "roadfood.com."

Very very good, though, not on the level of Gaetano's or, for that matter, DiVello's chicken cheesesteak. I have moved DiVello's chicken cheesesteak into the pantheon now, the very best of the best!
