Chewing Gum Fri, 01/16/04 5:50 PM (permalink)
Hi,

I'm John and I'm new. My friend Monk told me to register here because I could get good information from the group. I run zootcandy.com and have a customer that's asking about a gum she used to enjoy. She wrote:

"This gum was a sour cherry, sour orange and I thought it was made by Adams or something like that. It was very popular in the early 70s and even made a brief comeback in the late 80s."

Anybody have any ideas? I don't

Thanks.

Maybe she's thinking of Fruit Stripe gum, which came in those two flavors and lime and lemon too - all 4 varieties in one pack.

I remember that! It came in sour apple too. I remember it because my younger brother was addicted to the orange - Every day when my father left for work, my brother would ask him to bring him orange gum. I vaguely remember what the packages looked like; pastel colored, with a picture of whatever fruit the gum was flavored. As far as where or if it's available now, I have no clue - sorry. But it did exist.

Wasn't there a commercial for that gum WAY back that had a zebra in it. I always loved that gum because it smelled so good!

John, I definitely remember that gum! Haven't thought about it in years. I did a search, and it appears that, according to the experts, you can't get it anymore.

Thankyou to everyone that helped. I'll be coming back regularly with more questions.

A completely different question. Can you put pictures in these posts? If so, how?

I might be reviving a dead topic, but I was searching the web for an old favorite, Adams Sour Apple Gum, when I saw this thread. Adams Sour Gum came in Apple, Orange and I think Cherry and other flavors as well. I remember when my sister and I were about 8 and 10 years old, we gave a piece to a little mentally-handicapped boy (trying to be nice!) in the grocery store. We saw him about two minutes later in the next aisle stomping it into the floor! That might tell you how sour it was.

I've found retro-candy distributors that say they have had many requests for it but cannot get it anymore. I've seen other places that say it's now sold in other countries, but not here. I'd love it if the manufacturers brought it back!

What happened to Blackjack gum, by the way? I used to enjoy that in the 1980's. It came in a light blue package.

It's still being made. That's a very old type of gum. I'm addicted to the same company's clove flavor.

I think you can get some at www.vermontcountrystore.com.

I've seen BlackJack Gum back in stores locally here (West Michigan) for the last few months. It's even on the stands at my local gas stations counter top (Impulse Sales of course)...

Beeman's, Clove, and Black Jack are all made by Adams (a division of Warner-Lambert, a Pfizer company). According to someone I know in the candy business, these are considered "nostalgia" gums and are only available at certain times. They'll disappear from the market for a while and then suddenly reappear to appeal to the nostalgia of customers. Hence, they often appear at the cash register for impulse buys.

I loved the Black Jack licorice gum and Fruit Stripe. I remember that sour gum too because it was so sour it made your cheeks ache. I chew lots of gum now as I'm quitting smoking, and today picked up a huge plactic bucket of DUBBLE BUBBLE at Sam's Club! It's still as good as I remember. What I don't see anymore around here are the loose pieces of Bazooka Joe with the comics.

Do you have World Market - Cost Plus? They carry Adams gum, teaberry, blackjack, and clove flavors. When the clove is available, I buy several at a time to last until the next distribution, while the other flavors seem to be around most of the time.

Adams sour gum (Old Man Adams makes the sourest gum around!) was very popular in the mid to late sixties. I especially liked the sour orange - besides being very sour, it had a nice orange flavor. Unhappily, when the adams brands were sold to Warner-Lambert, they closed the original factories in Long Island City NY, moved everything to Jersey, and stopped making a lot of the flavors and brands.
While they occasionally bring back "Beeman's", "BlackJack", "Clove", "Teaberry", they do NOT bring back the great cinnamon gum, nor the sour gums. I've looked for them for years, and all of the "specialty sites" like Hometown Favorites, and Old Time Candy have told me that Warner-Lambert no longer makes it. Even though, they are bringing back some of the "old" trademarks (like the Adams name on some products).

Well, this could be outdated, but I think the gum you are referring to is Adams gum. It came in sour apple and sour cherry, as well as some other flavors (I think). Anyway, for a limited time, you can order it at the Vermont Country Store. I just got my new catalog today, and they are selling it until the supplies run out. The website for the online catalog is www.vermontcountrystore.com.

I've seen the Adam's sour gum in stores recently in the sour apple and sour cherry, never tried it though. I see the individual Bazooka gum all the time. The cartoons that come with it are so stupid they're funny.
