Curbside Grill I only have one Hot Dougs, N.side. Closed Sunday http://www.hotdougs.com/ Fry's cooked in duck fat fri-sat,long lines. I think a lot of us saw this guy on the Travel channel "Hot dog paradise" he has a big menu of sausage and is quite the character. Get there at 10am a half hour before they open, or forget it. If I was you it would be a good time to check out a street vendor, see how they do it. You will be in their shoes soon...........Go out an get a Chicago Deep dish pizza in between the dogs.....Bill

BillyB I only recommend spots I have been to. Don't care if the place was on TV. Was there on a wed. but there. A few, no many moons ago. And yes, he should check out some street vendors. Have always had to do one over the top and then the rest, whenever in a different area.

Cajun man - Johnny's on North Avenue in Elmwood Park for dogs, beefs, italian sausage and lemon ice. Gene 'n Judes on this website and up the road, Paradise Pup. Three great stops, all different. Hot Dlougs is a must and if you go, the Vienna Beef Hot Dog cafeteria is close by. try the dogs or corned beef.

You should check out Superdawg, on Milwaukee Ave. on Chicago's northwest side. It's an old-fashioned drive-in with carhop service, and the food is really good.

Only minutes from Barrington, east on Dundee Road, in Arlington Heights, is a Portillo's that should satisfy your taste buds for a Vienna Beef, natural casing, Chicago style hot dog. Be sure to order a piece of chocolate cake (highly recommended by Stricken Detective and myself). www.portillos.com CSD PhD Professor of Hot Dogs

Chi- Town- Bruce Can't go wrong with Portillos! Where you can find tom-tom, brand tamales Portillo's is a good choice to get good to very good versions of dogs and beef, however just because they have tom-tom tamales, doesn't mean you should eat them IMO. However the chocolate cake is excellent, shockingly good for being from a micro-chain fast food joint. In regards to Gene & Judes, realize that they subscribe to the Chicago minimalist school of dogs which means only mustard, oniions, relish and sport peppers...not the dragged through the garden variety (actually my prefered version) but they do have very good fresh cut fries. Hope you enjoy your visit... M

I guess that one you described is missing a pickle and tomato slices. :)

Some places, like Byron's, also include cucumber (not pickled, but fresh, salad style), green bell pepper rings, and lettuce. Another common ingredient, some say required, is celery salt. Buddy

Yeah, I always get celery salt on mine. Tasty stuff. I could do without the cukes and other salad fixins though. :)

If you don't feel like waiting in lines for Hot Doug's, you can try Fred Hots in Glenview (closer to Barrington, marginally, too). Same type hot dogs without as much waiting.

This may be after the fact, but ... Weiner and Still Champion in Evanston on Dempster- in addition to hot dogs the traditional way, Gus makes freshly dipped corn dogs, and you might even convince him to make you a piece of deep-fried bacon (heaven) or a some deep fried chili YUM. Also nearby in SKokie also on Dempster is Poochies, where in addition to a great hotdog you can get one of my personal favorites, a char salami sandwich..(which I like with mustard and grilled onions). double YUM!

I know you asked about dawgs & someone mentioned Paradise Pup here... I had a fine char-dawg there the other day w/ onion rings and a black cherry drink. Mightly fine. First time that I've had a hot dog there as I usually go for their delish cheeseburgers. I get mine on Black "Barvarian"(as their sign sez) rye w/ a dollop of Merkts cheddar spread. Great Burger. Get a hand-made shake too. Not far from O'Hare in case you're flying. I've been going here for about 20+ years. Hard to believe it! I'll cry if they ever sell it to someone else.

The OP stated that he will be in Barrington. Portillos in Crystal Lake near US 14 and Rte. 31 is only about 10 miles away and would be the easiest. Several posters here rec it and I'm a big fan as well, only I like their Italian Beefs best.

It has since been leveled and new constrruction without an identifying sign is underway. Always enjoyed D's.
