Chicago Day Trips - Vol II Sat, 01/3/09 1:43 PM (permalink)
After a week of Holiday fun and a house full of visitors, my younger son and I decided to go exploring...and for us, that means Roadfood and Museums!  We departed just after the lunch hour and were greeted with very light traffic as we made the trek to downtown Chicago.  After exiting the Kennedy Expressway at Ohio, we found ourselves northbound on Orleans and within a few blocks, we were greeted by our first stop...the venerable Mr. Beef on Orleans!

Parking was a snap as we scored a metered spot right around the corner.  Located in an older north side neighborhood of Chicago, the area features an eclectic mix of locals, tradesmen and tourists, most in search of the quintessential Chicago dining experience.

Looking just like the photos in Michael Stern's review....

...I was glad to see Pepsi products featured.   Upon entering, there were three distinct food groups arranged by menu boards with the first being...

...Mr. Beef's Deli.

Even with the close-up, our short visit did not reveal any takers for this menu selection.  Perhaps it is more requested on week days during the lunch hour.  Next up...

...the Chicago Style Hot Dog menu.  Adjacent to the CSD menu is the restaurant namesake, Italian Beefs, Sausages and Burgers.

Here's the Beef section...

As we were keeping our options open for additional stops and we wanted to remain light-of-foot for the Museum stop, we chose the traditional Chicago lunch of a Chicago Style Hot Dog with Fries and an Italian Beef.  We asked for each to be cut in two for easier sharing.

As a veteran Chicago Style Hot Dog consumer, this one was just fair.  It had the minimalistic toppings of mustard, relish and onion - similar to Gene & Jude's - and had a steamed non-poppy seed bun, but it just lacked the necessary flavor.

Here's the cut away view and while it took a nice picture, it just didn't measure up to many of Chicago's finest.

Accompanied by thin cut fries, these had potential but a little to long in the fryer left about half the order extremely hard and crunchy!  They were salted just right and were a nice size portion.  Personally, I'm not into crunchy fries.  Next up...

...the namesake.  It was served on...

...Gonnella bread, the Italian Beef bread of choice.  This was really fresh bread - perhaps as it was Monday, although it seems to be delivered daily to most store fronts and is generally left outside up against the door hours before opening.  The Gonnella product really holds up well to the au jus and forms a perfect marriage.

We ordered ours - Beef Sweet - which translated means an Italian Beef with a standard amount of au jus - as opposed to dry or wet- with sweet peppers - as opposed to hot, sweet or none.  The beef was really good and paired with the outstanding bread and sweet peppers that weren't to soggy, this was the highlight of the stop.

As it was after lunch, the crowd was thin.  The rectangular room is ringed with a small dining counter...

...which is topped with various photos and awards.

For more crowded lunch time operations, there is a small adjacent room with the tongue in cheek name of the Elegant Dining Room.  It features an industrial motif but serves its purpose.  Visits are short and purpose driven.

Next up, we visit our Museum de Jour....

Thanks for an interesting trip report...that Italian beef sandwich looks great...the bread looks a little too soft for my taste. Was it????? I like a "little" bite to the breasty crusty outside!

        Chicago's answer to Phillipe's!

I'm also finding that Vienna isn't quite as good as it once was.

Great to see Mr. Chicago at Mr. Beef!  I have never had anything but an Italian beef there and now I know it will stay that way.  How does this sandwich compare with other Italian beefs you have eaten?

Hi Ann - Happy New Year to you and Bob!  While I have the start of 5 Roadfood trips in the first 5 months of the New Year on the drawing board...I'm hoping after the first thaw we get a Chicago/Wisconsin get together organized.  The nine stopped a few months ago was awesome!  I love that Gonnella bread...good stuff!

Thanks!  While it is not as crusty as a NY/NJ hero roll, there is contrast between the outer and inner potion.  This is a homeotnw favorite which in part, accounts for its enormous popularity.  There is a range of dipping or spooning of the gravy or au jus which makes it necessary for a crusty exterior.

I'm not sure I could addres the Vienna comment, but on several trips to their factory outlet, the goods are really tasty!  Some of it may be the method of preparation and the choice of condiments and roll.

Vienna are tasty, but they just don't have the consistancy for me that they once had.

After departing Mr. Beef, we made the five minute drive to our museum destination - the Chicago History Museum.  Located in a trendy area at the corner of North Avenue and Clark Street, on the edge of Lincoln Park and within eye sight of Lake Michigan, this museum turned out to be real gem!

Lot of trendy buildings in the area....

...and eateries from every nation nearby...

Once again, we scored a street spot for a buck and after walking a short block, we spotted this fountain.

Lake Michigan is about a half block through those trees.

The Chicago History Museum is fairly good sized...

...and feaures only Chicago related exhibits.  While it can be a few dollars to get in, it is free on Monday and with our street spot find, ran us only a buck plus our donation.

As we live in The Land of Lincoln...

...first up for us was the Linciln exhibit and which had his deathbed on display.  Even though he was 6 foot 4 inches, he laid diagonally on this smaller bed until passing on.

My favorite area was Diorama Hall, which features miniature sets of Chicago history from fur trader town to the Chicago Fire to the Columbian Exposition.

Created 75 years ago, there are eight on display.  Here's a picture of the creation and you can see the creator in the middle of it all.

Here's the description in both English and Spanish.

My favorite was the Great Chicago Fire...shown here in the Diorama...

                  ...and described here.

                  Some things were interactive...

The first El car in Chicago...

The first locomotive engine in Chicago...

This display demonstrated the magnitude of the Chicago Fire. You can see (looking south) a large burn area from Lake Michigan on the east to the main branch of the Chicago River on the south to the north branch of the Chicago River on the west and lots more.

Sports were represented from everyone's favorite Sweetness - Walter Payton to...

                  ...our loveable losers...the Cubs!

There was a fun exhibit on the World's Fair or Columbian Expostition.

Even a little band named Chicago...

On the way out, there was one more exhibit to check out...

                  ChicagoStyleDog would be proud...museum quality!

                  With a life size replica....

Big enough for two kids to play IN!

This really got us thinking about another food stop...

After this exhilerating stop, we had worked up quite an appetite...so it was off in search of Roadfood...

The beef was clearly the winner at Mr. Beef.  It was ordered sweet, therefore no extra sauce was added or omitted.  It was just how I like it with great bread and perfect peppers.

It's a Squier, a cheap knock-off made by Fender for entry level players. They play ok, i have one. But these weren't even made when Chicago was around. You think they could've displayed a real Fender Stratocaster...

CTD, That Italian Beef looks awfully good!  A question for you:  What kind of pepper that?  It looks somewhat like a green bell, but I never imagined them as being sweet.  Does Mr. Beef have the giadinera as I have seen in pics of Al's?  How do the peppers compare to that?

You certainly know how to "party". That museum's display is right up my alley, I love anything steeped in local history and what better exhibit than a gigantic "Chicago Style Dog" and when I think of local music, the first band that always comes to mind is the band "Chicago" specifically the stuff they did on their first few albums (which is really before my time but still  amazing) I went to Mr. Beef in 2003 and got the hot n sweet "double dipped". Although I liked Johnnies, I was really too full to enjoy it. Perhaps an Italian Beef smackdown the next time I return to Chicago.

That Lincoln Park neighborhood sounds like where my friend lives.  I think maybe Lincoln Street?  I do recall that not only was the area very nice and safe, but the view of downtown was great from there.

Next time I am visiting, I will angle for a stop at that museum...looks like a winner.

and when I think of local music, the first band that always comes to mind is the band "Chicago"

When I saw the reference to Lincoln Park, the first song that came to mind was Steve Goodman's "Lincoln Park Pirates"

The lyrics can be found at the link below & the chorus is sung to the tune of "Yo, Ho, Blow the man down"

That Lincoln Park neighborhood sounds like where my friend lives.  I think maybe Lincoln Street?  I do recall that not only was the area very nice and safe, but the view of downtown was great from there.

Next time I am visiting, I will angle for a stop at that museum...looks like a winner.

After checking out the museum for almost 2 hours, we were famished.  We got to the car and drove about 5 minutes to our next destination - Clarke's.  Written up by Jenny Gourmand, a Roadfood lurker with zero posts since 2003, we decided to take a chance.

As it is late afternoon when we arrive, there are only two tables occupied.  Clarke's sits right next door to the old Biograph Theater...

...scene of a little shooting some years ago in the adjacent alley.

It's been renamed Victory Gardens Theater after a refurbishment and is still in operation.

Clarke's is both a bar and restaurant with the check out station inside the front door serving as a guidepost to your destination.  Staffed by friendly wait staff folks, you have a choice...

                                          Left into the bar area...

...and right into the coffeshop/diner style past the Specials Board.

The main dining area is bright and airy.

The menu's in B&W with a funky retro look to it...

                                          Lots of egg choices...

                                          As well as pancakes...

But with the Patty Melt on special from $7.99 to $5.99, we opted for a Patty Melt and Swedish Pancakes.  How's that for a combo after Beefs and dogs!

I kept waiting for Ward and June Cleaver to walk in!  The baseball player photo reminded me of buffetbuster at the Louisville Slugger Factory Tour, although this fellow was dressed a little bit more conservatively!

The Patty Melt was Diner perfect...toasted/grilled rye, killer grilled onions and nice flavorful beef patty with the right mix of cheese.

                                          It was smokin hot and...

                                          ...served with decent fries.

Next up, the Swedish Pancakes with the accompanying Lingonberry Sauce.  These were so light and airy, I couldn't stop.  These were perfection in a crepe with a touch of vanilla for sweetness and flavor along with a dusting of powdered sugar.

Check out the cross section for the number of layers...which further defined these beauties!  While many dining establishments offer this type of food and in similar comfort and price, this was a fine stop but not necessarily a destination.

Clarke's is open 24 hours, or so the sign says, and if we're down that way late night, we'll make a return trip.

ChiTownDiner -  oh why oh why did you have to post those beautiful pictures of / in Mr. Beef? Cruel, cruel! My all-time favorite sandwich on planet Earth is a beef / sausage combo ( dipped with giardiniera ) at Mr. Beef. Until recently, I worked at the Amtrak railroad yard just south of the Loop ( 34 years ), and I was able to get to Mr. Beef for lunch pretty frequently. Now, though, I'm newly retired ( disability ) and, since I live down in the south suburbs, lunch at Mr. Beef is just a distant memory. The only really good italian beef out my way is at Portillo's, and as good as it is, it ain't Mr. Beef. Guess I'm gonna have to make a trip up that way real soon. Really nice photos and an interesting post.             Bob

When ordering an Italian Beef in Chicago, you request either sweet, hot or nothing.  Sweet is green peppers, not really sweet, but cooked soft.  some places do a light char, but most have them simmering in an au jus like base.  They should be soft, but not falling completely apart.

Hot, on the other hand means, giardiniera, which (per Wikepedia) and Italian-American relish of pickled vegetables in vinegar or oil.  Typically, some peppers are chopped up, usually sport peppers as those are used on a Chicago style dog, and then all or some of the following are added...carrots, olives, cauliflower, celery, etc.  The authentic places that make their own guard the recipe and some even bottle it for sale.

Nothing gets you just that and I have seen folks ask for both.  There is usually a small additional upcharge for either one ranging from twenty-five cents to fifty cents.
