Does anyone have a good recipe for the roast beef used in a Chicago Style Italian Beef Sandwich? I want to have a "Chicago Style" party (with Hot dogs, deep dish pizza, etc) and want to make my own "roast beef."

I had never heard of an italian beef sandwich until I joined this forum, then I found that super walmart carries uncle charlies italian beef in the freezer section. Of course I dont know how it compares to the real thing but I enjoy it with sauteed green peppers and onions on a hard roll.. it might be kind of expensive to use for a party though

Uncle Charlies is pretty good. I sometimes make my own roast beef. To me what makes the sandwich GREAT as well as MESSY is a decent Sub roll, Giardiniera then double dip in the rich broth. Nottoli's in Chicago keeps me supplied with their shop made Giardiniera.

I made this a few weeks ago and it was pretty easy. I used the recipe found on site here, roasted the meat on Sat., placed it in the fridge overnite, then sliced it thin and placed in the crock pot on low all day with the broth and pan drippings (I added beef broth also). We lucked upon some great rolls from Costco - they were very hard on the outside and soft inside, which held up to the dipping. Made my own gardinera and peppers. It was a hit on Sun. evening.
