Chicago Sytle Italian Beef in North Carolina! Tue, 07/31/07 5:04 PM (permalink)
Finally, after nearly 20 years in the Triangle (Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill) I can get a decent Chicago Sytle Italian Beef in North Carolina!

Last night I was at Old Chicago, which yes, is a chain, for their grand opening in nearby Wake Forest (off Capital Blvd.) and enjoyed an Italian Beef sandwich. It was huge and had that wonderful familiar flavor of home. www.oldchicago.com

They are in several states, but this is the 2nd in NC. The 1st being in Wilmington and I'm told the food is consistent there.

Lots of great Chicago memorialbilia on the walls. Didn't try the pizza, they have thick and thin crust. I'll be back another time to try it on their pizza lunch bar (M-SA). If it doesn't pan out (no pun intended) I'll stick with the beef!

Just wanted to let any Chicago transplants in NC know we can now have a sigh of relief.

Oh, also can find Jays potato chips at Big Lots, as well as Dad's root beer on occassion.

For a good Chicago style dog try Cloo's Coney Island in Raleigh by Mission Valley.

Beef & dogs also available at Cat & Dawggs in Asheville.

Tried the pizza today - stick with the beef sandwiches! OC will give Chicago pizza a bad name!

Thanks, Viennadog. I grew up in central Ill but never had Chicago style beef. I'll have to definitely try OC. Any other recommendations for the triangle area?

Just as an FYI, I'm a transplanted Chicagoan who has missed authentic Italian Beef for years (at least I'm close enough to go back to Chicago a couple times a year for a fix).

Anyway, I've eaten at Old Chicago in both Omaha and Ames (Iowa), and while their Italian Beef isn't bad, I don't think I'd go so far as to call it "authentic". To me, it's close, but no cigar. The beef flavoring is right, but the bread isn't quite right. It's also drier than the real deal.

But, when you don't have anywhere selling the real thing, it's certainly a good option.

I agree, definitely not "authentic" but as I said it was decent. When the options are NONE or decent, I'll take decent!

I tried JJ Fish & Chicken Italian Beef Sandwich and It's as close as you can get in Chicago. They are off HWY 70 in Durham. They also have Vienna Beef hot dogs served Chicago style. I didn't try their hot dogs yet, but I am going to . the store number i beleive was 598-6000. I hope that helps.
