Chicago in June

I've never been there, will be in town for a few days in June to visit my cousins, I'm wondering what are some good candidates? I love thin crust pizza, Vito & Nick's sounded like a good choice. I'd like to hit some types of ethnic places I don't usually get the opportunity to eat at. Polish, German, Asian etc... something a bit different.

The best advice that I can give you is to check out the LTH Forum website. The site is Chicago specific and has never led me astray. http://www.lthforum.com/bb/index.php It also wouldn't be a bad idea to check out some of the reruns of WTTW's Check Please. You can find them on the web (e.g. You Tube). This show is based on three "regular Joes" who have each picked their favorite restaurant that the other two visit. They then sit around and discuss their meals. The show is quite popular in fact the phrase," Check Please effect" has been coined after an establishment has been aired. This once "secret spot" has been exposed to the masses and the wait time for a table raises exponentially. With this said some of my favorite spots in the city are: TAC Quick - Thai Spoon Thai - Thai Tank Noodle - Pho Cafe Iberico - Tapas Kuma's Corner - Burgers (and atmosphere) Khan's - Pakistani BBQ Semiramis - Lebanese

I second visiting LTH forum and especially their GNR - Great Neighborhood Restaurants which you can run a print out of it's guide. Breaks down places by location. There are so many ethnic places of all kinds that you'll want to stay longer and explore!

Chicago in June should be perfect. Warm sun without being a scorcher a cool breeze off the lake. Should be a great trip for you. I love Chicago and have been there many times and love to go back whenever I can. There are thousands of wonderful places to eat. I will list a couple of my favorites; DAO Thai restaurant on E. Ohio St just a block and 1/2 off of Michigan towards the lake. Great Tom Yum soup and other delicious dishes. Hot Doug's --- incredible hot dogs and sauages. My last visit I had a duck sausage topped with foie gras and my wife had elk sausage with artisan cheese. On weekends they make french fries in rendered duck fat. Expect to wait in line for an hour +. A $20 cab ride from the mag mile (one way) great place to go if you're driving. Check their website before you go to make sure they are open. They close for 6 weeks a year because they can. I know you said you prefer thin crust but when in Chicago you really should try the deep dish pizza. My personal favorite is Gino's Est on Superior St. Where I get the sausage pit with a single piece of sausage covering the pizza. You can get thin crust anywhere, this stuff is not available around the corner. Cemita's Puebla on North Ave. Also quite aways from "downtown" Chicago but great authentic Mexican food, especialty their tortas, and cheap by Chicago standards. One of my favorite restaurants in the world is Phoenix Chinese Restaurant. It is on Archer Ave right across from the Chinatown Mall. They serve dim sum from 10-2. Another place where you expect to wait especially on the weekends.. If you have never had dim sum or only ordered it off of a menu this is the place to go. They have little, old chinese ladies wheeling about metal carts full of steamed, fried, poached, grilled, etc delicacies. Absolutely fabulous!!!! Have fun and enjoy Chicago!

I like Pizzaria Due, which is Pizzaria Uno's 2nd restaurant. Its in a neat old mansion, and they serve great deep dish pizza. You cant beat Harry Carey's restaurant for a vast array of food, and the bar next door is alot of fun.

Definately would recommend you hit a good Italian Beef/hot dog joint. But since you'll only be here for a few days it would be good to know what area you'll be in so you don't have to spend half your time traveling. The Chicago area is really much larger than most realize, just south to north in the city limits is often much more than an hour drive (know all too well). There are usually good options for beef and dogs in any area of the city. Also, the GRNs from LTHforum are a great resource, but there is much more to be found other than just whats on that list.
