Nothing has been formally planned for Thursday night, although a few of us are going to the Frontera Grill.

You mentioned Saturday night as an option. Is there something specific planned? Or will tour partcipants be on their own to do different things?

I'm confused.

Stephen Rushmore Jr. We wouldn’t advise tagging behind/alongside the Roadfood eating tour.

So if we have to work that day & were only able to join you for lunch, we are SOL ( So Outta Luck )?

We are going to depart from the Holiday Inn Mart (Chicago) at 9:30 AM sharp, so arrive about 10-15 minutes early.

Well, let's see how many people are interested in a Thursday night gathering.  I reckon most of you are staying at the Holiday Inn downtown.  So, we want something nearby, because you'll be on your own for transportation.  Although downtown Chicago has many restaurants, not a lot of them are Roadfood-worthy.  Lots of fast food chain options for the office workers, and lots of higher end places for their bosses with expense accounts.  The pizza places in the downtown area, while well known, are considered by the locals to be tourist attractions, so we'll eliminate those.

How adventurous do you want to get?  Greek Town and Chinatown are both a reasonable cab ride away from where you're staying.  If you're willing to spend a little more on cab fare, or if you want to use public transportation, we can get out to the neighborhoods where the selection increases exponentially.

Give us some feedback, tour members.  Is Thursday night the best option?  I'm guessing that after Saturday's run ("Hot Doug's legendary foie gras hot dogs and duck-fat French fries as well as deep-dish pizza, South Side soul barbecue, and piled-high corned beef", plus who knows what else), another meal will not be a priority for most of you.  I also figure that the majority of out of towners will be on their way out of town on Sunday, but I could be wrong.

Also, do you have a specific place or cuisine in mind that you've always wanted to try?

Let's hear from anyone interested and then we can determine the rest of our weekend plans.

I would vote for Chinese because our Chinatown is so awesome and that is not on the menu for any of the days...
I escpecially love "Little" Three Happiness, 209 Cermak, but that may run a tad small for our group, I could also be persuaded to do Eds Potsticker house in Bridgeport, but true Chinatown would be more fun to walk thru.
I haven't eaten there in a while, but had a great meal at the south end of Wentworth at 65 restaurant, for Chinese seafood.
I also know Lao Sze Chuan gets a lot of love on that other board, but I've never tried it....

If you head to Chinatown, maybe you can squeeze in a visit to Ricobene's for a Breaded Steak Sandwich....

Why head out when you have culinary perfection without ever leaving the hotel?  Bolognese Spring Rolls or Polenta with Miso Glazed Salmon anyone? You may want to cancel that bus tour.

Well, let's see how many people are interested in a Thursday night gathering.

Lori and I are interested. Our plane lands at 8pm on Thursday, so we'd be on the later end of anything going on Thursday. We will rent a car.

I think I'm fairly adventurous, but Lori is less so.

We'd also be interested in other evenings, or Sunday morning. Our plane leaves at 4:20 on Sunday.

Ralph,

Getting in that late puts you in downtown Chicago, I'm guessing, around 9:30-10:00pm.  Most of the places in Greek Town are open until midnight.  We can make a great meal by filling the table with hot & cold appetizers and baskets of crusty Greek bread.  Okay, maybe an entree or two to split for the table.  Also, the Greek restaurants are used to handling bigger groups, which I hope this will turn into.  And, if you're renting a car, they all have free valet parking.

If Lori wants to give menu approval, here are links to a few of the prime candidates:

http://www.pegasuschicago.com/index.php
http://www.greekislands.net/menu-greek-islands
http://www.theparthenon.c...r-menu/dinner-menu.htm

If this is too exotic, we can always hit an all night, (or at least most of the night) Chicago Style Hot Dog Place.  There are also plenty of late night taquerias to be found as well.

What about that other guy from Pittsburgh?  Any idea what his plans are?

Is there a good pizza place close to the hotel which delivers? I am slightly incapacitated.

lefty,
Smoque is only open until 9:00pm on Thursday.  Depending on when you get in, that will determine whether you can make it or not.  As for distance, it is about 40 blocks north and about the same distance west from the hotel.  If you have a rental car, it is an easy run up the Kennedy Expressway (I-94) to Irving Park Road and then east to Pulaski.  Just a guess, but I would say about $25 each way in a cab.  If you're an adventurous sort, you can take the CTA Blue Line for a couple of bucks each way.  Get off at the Irving Park stop and Smoque is about a 3-4 block walk from there.

blizzardstormus,
Wish I could help on this one, but it's been a long time since I've had a pizza from anywhere delivered to anyplace.  Your best bet is to Google the usual downtown pizza suspects (Pizzeria Uno, Pizzeria Due, Gino's East, Lou Malnati's, etc.) and see what you can find out.

If you want to PM me and fill me in on your level of "incapacitation" I might be able to offer some other solutions to your dilemma.

Lori has declared that she's willing to go along with anything I want. I in turn am happy to yield to a local expert. A tableful of Greek appetizers and a cup of avgolemono soup sounds like a great combination to me, and free valet parking is very attractive.

I have no clue about buffetbuster's plans other than what he's said in this thread about arriving late.

I'd be happy to go by the hotel to bring along other people who might want to come.

So, let's call Thursday night a lock.  Anyone else interested in sampling some of Chicago's premiere ethnic foods is welcome to join us.

Ralph, I'll PM you with my various telephone numbers so we can stay in contact.  Are you flying into O'Hare or Midway?

Ralph Melton's plane lands at 8pm.  By the time he and Lori deplane, get their rental car and drive into downtown Chicago, it will be well after 9:00pm; possibly even 9:30.

As for me, I have no problem doing a late dinner.  I'm not sure how that affects the rest of the group.  All the Greek Town restaurants are open until midnight, so we won't have a problem getting served.

I see that visiting Taste of Home is mentioned.
Since that's my hometown, I'll let you in on a few things:

The Reiman Visitor's Center/Taste of Home Outlet is at the corner of Broad Street, the main street in this historic town, and right across from the picturesque Courthouse. There is a test kitchen there, and a history of Greendale, as well as information about Reiman, who is sort of a patron saint of Greendale.
The Outlet has LOTS of cool things for sale from the various catalogs and magazines that this branch of Reader's Digest publishes. Cooking items, books, even furniture. It's very fun to browse.
If you're in need of coffee, across the street is the Village Coffee Shop.
If you've decided you're in need of marble-slab ice cream, malts, or shakes instead, just a few doors down from the Outlet is Ferch's Malt Shoppe, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that was using the marble slab before it became trendy.
There are also several little boutique shops up and down Broad Street.
Also across the street is Ricardo's Pizza...some of the best pizza (IMO) in WI.
Be prepared to take lots of pictures, if history is your thing. Greendale was originally developed in 1936 as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal in the wake of the Great Depression, and the "Originals" (as the first houses are called) are still kept up and lived in. It's a very pretty town.
