I wasn't part of the official tour, but was there on Thursday night for Greek food and the public events on Friday in Milwaukee.  It was great to see the regular Contingent members, as well as some Roadfooders I've only met once or twice before.  And it was fun to meet new people, like Ralph Melton and Mrs. Ralph Melton and lefty66 and his friend.

Here's the pictures I took on Friday, as well as some on Saturday, when I went out with stricken_detective, Mr. Maki and Mrs. Roadhouse for our own little Chicago tour- Country House in Clarendon Hills, Calumet Fisheries and Ed's Potsticker House!

You shouldn't need to be a Facebook member to see those!

This was my first Roadfood trip and now my first post.  Among my favorites were the coleslaw at the Serb Fish Fry.  This is the first coleslaw I have ever had that I would make at home...if I knew the ingredients.  Oregano, scallions...any other guesses fellow Roadfooders?  And the wings at Lems!!!  You could bounce a quarter off that skin, close your eyes and you're in Buffalo.   Thanks to everyone for such a great trip.

I tasted garlic in the slaw...and it is the first non-creamy slaw I have liked. Had double portions!

Jane & Michael Stern's recipe

Directions:

  1. Whisk together all wet ingredients.
  2. You can use a cider vinegar if desired and the sugar can be lessened if you desire not such a 'sweet' taste.
  3. Pour over 8 cups chopped cabbage (or 1 lb prechopped bag of coleslaw mix).
  4. Place in refrigerator and chill overnight.
  5. If too 'wet' drain slightly before you serve.

Well, I having "digested" my first Roadfood Tour, I have decided to submit content on a pre and post tour eating excursions.  If they pass muster you'll see my reviews for Calumet Fisheries (smoked seasfood) and Silver Palm (Three Little Piggies sandwich)
Regarding the tour, my favorites were, kringles from both bakeries in Racine, apple pie at "The Elegant Farmer" in Mukwonago, WI,  and corned beef at McBob's in Milwaukee.  I skipped a Italian beef at Mr. Beef's with expectation that I would get one in at the Scottsdale franchise of Al's #1 Italian Beef on my Arizona Fall League trip, but they were closed.  Will have to wait for my 2012 spring training trip.

Just my unsolicited opinion- I've found that even the Al's franchises here in Chicago don't hold a candle to the original location on Taylor St., so I'm not sure I'd have much hope for the one in Arizona.
