Chickie and Pete's in Philly

This is one of the coolest places to go in Philly. Great crabs/crab fries/mussels in red/white. Great place to go b4 and Eagles/Phillies game. Must try if in PHilly-serveral locations.

one of Philly's institutions...WHy go before the game, they serve the crab fries AT the games...Hot day, cold beer, crab fries - wash it down with a dollar dog. Pitchers and catchers soon.

I looked at their menu. Seems like just a sports bar type place that doesn't even know that steamers are supposed to be soft-shell clams.

A steamer has nothing to do with whether the shell is hard or soft. It has to do with whether the particular type of clam in question is better served steamed.

Besides which, clams don't shed or molt as do crabs, lobsters and other crustaceans...they move from their smaller shell to another larger shell, which, has in turn, been abandoned by another of its ilk moving on to larger corrals.

A steamer clam is a particular type of clam. It is a soft-shell clam, as opposed to the hard shell clam such as the littleneck as served by the particular restaurant under discussion. Steamer clams are also known as Ipswich clams, long-neck clams and pisser clams. It is not called a steamer clam because it is steamed. It is called a steamer clam because it is particularly suited for steaming. It is also the standard clam used for frying -- as in whole-belly fried clams.

By the way, clams do not change shells.

I think the place is fun for a low key night of dinner with friends and for games of course. Their mussels are truly awesome.

Well,it's not MY red sauce but I do like it. They had one dish I wasn't so hot on, I think it was kind of a crab melt. I like the selection of beer they have available as well.

I LOVE them in the red sauce! I only order certain things at C&P. Mussels in red, crab fries with cheese, hot and spicy shrimp, fried shrimp (the best I ever had) and the magooby. Their wings are pretty good, also. Seeing as you're from the area and enjoy mussels and a nice beer selection, you should try "Eulogy."

It's a Belgian bar in Old City at 2nd and Chestnut. Great burgers, mussels and beer selection. A little pricey, but it's a nice treat. Are you familiar with that area?

It's possible that it's a misprint and should have been steamed clams rather than steamer clams.

The mussels are great! There red sauce is so good-the crab legs are great in that salty/spicy oily garlicy mess.

not a big fan of Eulogy. Like Monk's or the Kopper Kettle for mussels. Don't get me wrong, Eulogy has good apps and a ton of beers and eating on a casket is cool and all but not really a fan of their food.

i visited Chickie and Pete's for the first time two days ago, before attending a concert at the Spectrum - i was pleasently surprised by the food! crab fries, mussels, hot and spicy shrimp were wonderful...they serve excellent buffalo wings too!
