Chinese Christmas Tue, 12/7/04 12:35 PM (permalink)
I'm having friends over this weekend for a Chinese Christmas. I'm making a trash can punch. Anyone have any good dip recipes? Or any good appetizer recipes?

I guess what I'm really trying to ask is what types of dips or appetizer will go good with trash can punch?

      Ok Trash Can Punch

      2 Bottles Of Everclear
2 Bottles Of Vodka (100 Proof)
12 Cans Of Hawaiian Fruit Punch
What ever kind of fruit you like (sliced)

Wash out a brand new trash can, mix the punch and the spirits together. Then cut the fruit up and add them to the mix. Let set for at least 1 hour (the longer it sits the more potent the fruit get).

angeltx, what doesn't go godd with traash can punch???

How about the usual cocktail party finger foods and munchies, like pigs in a blanket with several different styles of mustards to dip in; tortilla chips with medium hot, and super hot salsa's; various crackes with clam dip, and a good creamcheese/crab dip.

Sorry, but I don't have recipes handy right now. Just search on soem of the many internet sites and you'll get several. Good luck, and may the one who drains the can be happy.

                          I'm offended.

                          No, just kidding.

Angel, here's a recipe for my mother's Clam Dip. This goes particularly well with Wheat Thins. (and trash can punch)

                          Bushie's Mother's Clam Dip

                          1 small onion
                          1 small green pepper
4 cans minced clams (drain and rinse well)
1/2 lb sharp cheddar cheese - grated
                          8 Tb ketchup
                          2 Tb Worchestershire sauce
                          1/4 cup sherry

Saute chopped onions and peppers in butter. Add clams and other ingredients, mix, then mix in the cheese and heat until melted.

When I was an undergraduate student at NC State University, we would make trash can punch for domitory parties. Mostly, we served cheese and crackers, chips and pretzels. We would make the punch with 180 overproof rum and Everclear and age it at least a week in the dorm snack bar freezer. At the first party in the Fall, we would always have new Freshmen who would show up and demand to have something non-alcoholic to drink. They were always told - "...just eat the fruit..." This was a traditional way to lose your olive!

My "Family" in California does this gift exchange----and we used to do it at our "Company Christmas Party"---can make for some interesting evenings!!! Never heard it called Chinese Christmas though--cant remembewr the 2 that i did hear it refered to though. I recommend it to all--it was always the only reason alot of folks came to our company party---just to watch the scheming and wait till the person who picked first getws to play spoiler!!!

I have also heard this kind of party called a "white elephant" party. As a matter of fact, here at work we will be having our white elephant holiday party on Friday. I work for the government, so this title is much more politically correct!!

Reminds me of Jean Shepherd's " A Christmas Story" where the neighborhood dogs run off with the family turkey so they go to a Chinese restaurant for Christmas dinner featuring the duck including head. Jean's stories take place in Hammond, IN ( changed to Holman in the movie) where I spent some time at in the mid 80s. I looked for some of the locales mentioned in his stories but never found boyhood friend Flick's tavern.

I was trying to compare the terms Chinese Christmas with one I am a bit more familiar with... a Chinese Firedrill. Usually assigned to a chaotic situation. Is that a fair description for your Party??

Hey I live witnin a couple of miles of the River...Am I included in the 'other' definition? I may not see'in that we took the wheels off the house last year. Inquiring Crackers want to know!!

Since I live in a place where the largest ethnic group is Chinese (and Mandarin may be the predominant language in my apartment building) I thought by the title of this you were intending to have a bunch of people over and give them tangerines or something. I was quite surprised by the web site. This is a type of party I have attended and was served tamales, frijoles and arroz. Call it "Mexican Christmas" if you want (although no pinata in sight). Anyway, it was fun.

Just because it might seem interesting to some, another association to this topic for me is an institution in San Francisco called "Kung Pao Comedy Christmas". This is an event, held in one of the city's largest Chinese restaurants on Christmas Day evening, of Jewish comedy. It's sort of a "something to do on Christmas while all the stores are closed and goyim are doing their thing" event for Jews (and their friends). I've been. It's great fun.

That's so cool! Although "goyim" really is a derogatory term for non-Jews, but...anyway, I'm Jewish and it's pretty much a stereotypical thing that we go out for Chinese food and go to the movies on Christmas, since usually nothing else is open. Nothing wrong with that!

                                                  No, just kidding.

Angel, here's a recipe for my mother's Clam Dip. This goes particularly well with Wheat Thins. (and trash can punch)

                                                  Bushie's Mother's Clam Dip

                                                  1 small onion
                                                  1 small green pepper
4 cans minced clams (drain and rinse well)
1/2 lb sharp cheddar cheese - grated
                                                  8 Tb ketchup
                                                  2 Tb Worchestershire sauce
                                                  1/4 cup sherry

Saute chopped onions and peppers in butter. Add clams and other ingredients, mix, then mix in the cheese and heat until melted.

Thanks alot.........I made the dip wish I would have doubled the recipe, It will be one of the dips I make again.

We've played this game at several parties that I have gone to. There is usually one gift that gets taken by a number of people before the game ends. What we usually do is set a limit on the price of the gift such as a $10 gift or a $20 gift. Also, we are not white trash either.

I've been to an annual Christmas party for probably the last eight years that features the "gift exchange". I've never heard it called "Chinese Christmas" though. It certainly does liven up the party.
Interesting, though, about people going to Chinese restaurants on christmas Day----I'd never thought of doing that, partially because I eat Chinese a few times a week.
BT, do they still do that "Kung Pao Comedy Christmas" in San Francisco? Is it worth a trip up for it?
And ConeyIslandLou, you should always have your roast duck with the head attached!

They are still doing it. This year it's at the New Asia Restaurant in Chinatown and there are actually shows on 12/23, 12/24/ 12/25 and 12/26. Whether it's worth a trip probably depends on how much of a fan you are of the commedians. This year it's as follows:

                                                            quote:
Judy Gold headlines the show, with additional performances by Page Hurwitz, Brad Zimmerman and Lisa Geduldig. Dinner shows include a seven-course banquet-style dinner. The later cocktail shows feature only vegetarian egg rolls. This is an all-ages event. Please note that the comedy is kosher, but the food is not.
                                                            .

These seem to be local SF commedians, but then quite a few big-time commedians got their start in SF including Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Goldthwaite and Dana Carvey. I actually saw all of them at small SF clubs before anyone (including m,e) had ever heard of them.

The time I went they had Henny Youngman--right before he died. That's largely why I went.
