Hi! I'll be traveling Christmas day and am stopping for the night near Indianapolis. Does anyone know of a good place to eat that will be open that night?

I am sorry to report that INDIANA, ALL OF INDIANA, will close on Friday Evening December 24th at 6 PM, to allow all the Residents and Inmates of the Hoosier State to enjoy Christmas with their families. INDIANA will reopen, after church, on Sunday December 26th !! Seriously, I am not sure which restaurants will be open, other than Waffle House !!

Platz, what about staying in a hotel with an attached restaurant? Maybe it would be more likely to be open than a standalone eatery? Brad

In my experience traveling on the interstate on Christmas Day, even McD and Burger King close at noon. We wound up at a very crowded truck stop, the only thing open for food or gas. Forgot, one year a Chinese buffet was open.

How about a Chinese restaurant? They're all open in the Philly area.

Being a single guy with virtually non-existent cooking skills, my Christmas Day dinner is always at a chain truckstop, usually Flying J. Pretty sad, I know, but it's better than starving.

Just a thought but you might want to call Shapiro's to see if either of thier locations will be open. I looked at the website but didn't see anything about Christmas day.

Okay, here's one. If you eat at my Monster-in-Law's house on Christmas Day in my place, I will GLADLY eat at a Flying J Truckstop instead. It will start out with her now knowing how long to cook the turkey, nevermind that she stuffed it with stuffing made from liver sausage, gizzards, heart meat and probably dog poo. Then, she will announce that her other dauther in law brought "those ****ty rolls she makes" again, which the monster-in-law will proceed to burn to a crisp in her oven on purpose so she can once again call them "those ****ty rolls she (say it really evil) makes". Once everything is out of the oven, the monster in law will yell out "all "youse" kids sit down and eat some of this.". The kids will all look at us (their parents) as if we are trying to punish them by making them eat anything "grandma" cooked. They will pick at their food, the monster-in-law will complain to us that our kids just don't eat, and hten she will proceed to bring out the "chocolate pie" that she made two days ago and left on the counter (yes with whipping cream on it". She either leaves it on the counter or puts it in the cupboard next to the open jars of mayo and tartar sauce she keeps in there (which she says do not have to be refrigerated). She will serve this salmonella pie with milk that is usually dated one month prior. This is why I will volunteer to take your spot at Flying J!!!

Many of the Chinese Restaurants are open Christmas Day. Unfortunately, I know AL was joking, but he did describe this state fairly well.

ALLGOOD, you have my sympathy regarding your mother-in-law situation, and you also have my thanks for giving me a new appreciation for my Christmas dinners at Flying J, both past and future.

A few years ago we got to my late mother's place in small town Indiana the day before Christmas. Most of the rest of the family were traveling that day so we were having the family Christmas the day after Christmas. On Christmas day we decided to go out to eat so we ended up at a Chinese place. The odd thing was that there were maybe 25-30 Mexicans there having Christmas dinner.

Thank you all for your helpful and entertaining replies. Since I'm eating Asian at Lu Lu's Noodles in Pittsburgh on Dec. 26, I think I'll pass on Christmas Chinese. I've never been to a Flying J's so if I see one open, I'll try it. I just checked and there's a Bob Evan's adjacent to the hotel. If they're open, I think I'll have chicken and noodles. Otherwise, I'll make use of the fridge and microwave in my room. I'll check Shapiro's and other forum favorites for my return trip. Happy Holidays! KP

There is a Flying J truck stop on I-65 at either the 99 or the 95 mile exit on the south side of Indy. Also a Pilot T/S. But F/J is better. Also another Flying J on the 465 on the west side of town between I-70 and I-74.

I note that the Melting Pot, which apparently was open on Christmas last year, says on its web site that it will be closed on December 24 and 25.

Curbside Grill yes you should check websites and phone ahead or be TTM. But the OP has not stated party size. my picks are the Polo Club and BucaDe Bepo if in Indy. Pickings Small http://www.poloclubsteakhouse.com/ http://www.bucadibeppo.com/menu/index.aspx only if you have a Family. Feeds an Army.LOL For Bucca De Pepo, there are 2 locations, one downtown & one on the far northeast side of town. The location on the far northeast side of town is just off the Castleton exit on the beltway 465. The downtown location is right downtown, difficult to find parking even on Christmas Day.
