Christmas Breakfasts

When I was a child, or course we'd wake up at the crack of dawn or earlier to see what Santa brought. After we opened our gifts and began to play, my mom used to make a special breakfast. This was to hold us over until Christmas dinner. Did any of you have such a tradition?

Mom must have been too tired at our house 'cause it was usually just cereal and toast with jelly! Maybe some oatmeal with maple syrup.

Mama would lay out a weight watchers worst nightmare or ultimate fantasy depending on how you looked at it.
Cream horns, custard filled, glazed and chocolate covered donuts. Cheese, apple and cherry danish. Cruellers, cookies, hot cocoa anything else that assured a proper sugar rush.
Followed by the inevitable sugar coma and an early bedtime. She alway's had to work the next day! Pretty slick trick looking back on it!
Christmas was for treats and sweets and it was one day we could gorge and graze in pastry paradise.
Hmmm the rest of the year we hardly ever had this stuff around and no one seemed to crave it except on Christmas morning. We all waited with great anticipation then made ourselves sick of it. She may have been a tad more clever than I thought!

Breakfast: Eat breakfast on Christmas day (as a child...)

Dinner: This is the main meal of the day where all the goodies are/were served. Some call this "lunch". NOT in the SOUTH, friends.

Supper: Leftovers from dinner.

Adjudicator is absolutely correct here. Dinner is the main meal of the day. You either have breakfast, lunch, dinner; or breakfast, dinner, supper. It all depends on what time of day the main meal is served.

My Dad was very strict on this topic. Only the stockings could be opened before breakfast. Early on my Mom would make either pancakes or scrambled eggs with toast, or in really good years, a coffee cake. Later, after the breakfast casserole and quiche had been invented/rediscovered, we would have that. Only after the dishes were safely nestled in the dishwasher could the true joy begin.

Dinner was always later in the afternoon,say 2-3:00 usually a prime rib or turkey with appropriate side dishes.

BTW, even though he has been gone for a number of years, we still follow this rule and several others of my Dad's rules, including change your care oil every 2,500 miles, no exceptions!

Christmas breakfast has always been special. Our family has always gone way out for this particular meal which is done directly after presents are opened.

It usually is orange juice freshly squeezed, fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs. Mamaw Smiths hot fresh biscuits, sausage gravy, Mamaw Smith's apple butter, hot Mellow Joy coffee and usually some great libation hidden and close by

I hope all of you enjoy your breakfast and this very special time together. Unfortunately I will miss it this year but Mamaw Smith will do the breakfast for the grandkids after Santa makes his visit and discover what he left under the tree. My daughter lives almost across the street.

I usually end up making waffles for everyone. It seems as though waffles have become somewhat a tradition here. A few times, monkey bread was requested along with hot cocoa. But now that we have "global warming" it's not cold outside here. But Merry Christmas to everyone anyway!

I have absolutely no memories of Christmas breakfast. With a family of five boys, our parents would lock us up in our rooms so we could not get out before they were ready to wake up. You would have five raving kids who could care less about sustenance.
When all was opened, I suspect that breakfast consisted of something to eat with milk. I think our Christmas word for the first meal of the day was "Refrigerator".

Always Eggs Benedict growing up. My Mom insisted on only Bay's English Muffins and made a fantastic Hollandaise.

I have to concur with doggydaddy-I have no memory of the breakfast as i was always way too busy investigating my new toys.However,since my Mom did everything special over the holidays, I am sure it was not something we usually ate the rest of the year...

Breakfast on Christmas morning is our main to-do. Our son and his wife, daughter and son-in-law, our two grandchildren, my mother, and my sister are all here. We eat, then open our gifts. The menu varies from year to year, and hubs has always cooked everything. This year we are having sausage, bacon, country ham, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, coffee, and hot chocolate for the kids. Hubs bought one of those cocoa latte machines at Bed Bath and Beyond. It makes delicious, frothy hot chocolate, and keeps it warm.

I hope everyone here on the boards has a joyous holiday, and that Santa Claus is good to all.

The Grand Children open gifts about 9:00A, breakfast follows.

Homemade sausage gravy (Paul, my wife is from Sevierville so I'm probably eating the same kind of gravy as Mamaw Smith makes) cheesy omelets, milk, hot chocolate, coffee, jams, etc.

Christmas bgreakfast!!!---Pannatone!! coffee or hot chocolate---sipped thruigh candy cane straw!--stollen---juice--usually oj---and of course--being New Englanders---PIE!!!--i am a Mincemeat pie for breakfast guy!

Christmas morning breakfast would always be that darn Christmas morning wife-saver casserole. I hate green pepper and this thing always had green pepper in it!

My mom usually bakes a tray full of sticky buns for my family and we'll eat those with bacon and hot chocolate. This year, I skipped the breakfast items and went with the ham, baked beans, and potato salad.

I stayed up far too late finishing my latest book so I would be all prepared for the new ones I received today, so my breakfast consisted of a cup of coffee with some eggnog Coffeemate.

I wouldn't recommend it.

My Christmas breakfast consisted of about a dozen homemade oatmeal raisin cookies and a glass of trauth dairy egg nog (Not a good breakfast for a diabetic).

Then at noon we met my father for our "traditional" Chinese Buffett dinner, we stuffed ourselves until 2 pm then went back to the house to open gifts, watch Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, eat more durn Christmas cookies, and home made summer sausage, and jerky.

Finally Dad & I escaped and went to the local casino and left them some of our Christmas cash

Returning home to find the house still standing, my seven year old bouncing off the walls and driving his mother insane. We walked in she said, "I am going to take a bath" and poof she disappeared.

So dad & I played with my son, that HyperScan game system thing is cool!!!

As a kid we never had anything special for Christmas breakfast except sometimes we would have banana or nut bread..same tradition on thanksgiving. Thanksgiving and Christmas (and occasionally Easter) were the only days that we had 'dinner' instead of supper, and were the rare occasionas that the main meal of the day were in mid-afternoon rather than early evening. As an adult, especially once I got married, I started making a nice breakfast on the holidays so that we would have something at least a bit healthier than candy before dinner. Now that I am divorced I will probably tone it down..but will still make my eggnog pancakes!

Bisquits and Gravy. Scambled eggs. Fried ham. Sometimes a coffe cake thrown in for good measure. Tradition.

Always fried country ham, biscuits, juice, coffee here also. I still do the same but since I have to WAKE MY KID'S UP(17, 11)and have always had to, it's more of a brunch..Lunch usually isn't necessary, but when it's dinner (supper) time, we're all ready!

My wifes family is Italian so we always have seafood for Christmas Eve. I always save some squid and when the presents are opened the next morning, I sit down for squid and fried eggs over easy, truly a Monterey tradition.

Aw come on folks. We still have a few holidays to get thru before we start discussing Christmas. I know some of the retailers started to display their Christmas fare but I try to wait untill after Pearl Harbor day {a somber occasion} to think about it. Chow Jim

I don't care!!! Christmas breakfast is my #1 favorite. This will be my first Christmas without my wife. I am cleaning out my attic and getting rid of all the Christmas decoration that we have gathered over the last 44 years. I have paid my yard guy to do this. Good luck to him as the attic is crowded.

I guess I will have Christmas breakfast with my daugher this year. No one here except me and my ugly dog.

In my family, I'm the only one... I'm 18, but I still get up at 4:45 in the morning to get my stocking. My mother made it herself. Breakfasts in the years 1994-1995 were cereal. 1996-2007, were cinnamon Rolls with fresh coffee.


Christmas Eve Dinners were something else.


My grandmother, who is sadly no longer with us, as of July 4th, made killer and I mean killer prime rib. I remember in 1994, she tried to burn down the house making popovers. We would open their presents on Christmas Eve. My grandfather, who is also no longer with us, as of 2002, used to be very meticulous about tree lights. Colored lights were on the inside of the tree, whereas white lights were on the outside. He decorated the tree himself, while Grandma made the prime rib, and her world famous Sherry Cake. My mother, myself, and dad would arrive at about 3:00 in the afternoon, no matter the weather. Dad and grandma would break out the beer, while my mother had eggnog. I would have a Madras, or orange juice and cranberry juice mixed. My parents would only end their hostilities towards each other on Christmas. We would eat at 5:30 and have presents at 7:00.

Then afterwards, we would go home. They would leave the next day to go to Waltham, to have christmas with my two cousins, who have moved to NYC to be in college.

fresh pizza dough
bacon on one pizza
ham on the other
sausage on yet another
scrambled eggs (done a little wet so they don't get rubbery in the oven)
freshly grated parmesan cheese over the whole thing
olive oil sprinkled over the whole thing

Bake until crust is browned at edges.

YEAH !!!!!

FOR DINNER 2:00 PM.
NOW WITH OUR FAMILY SO LARGE AND OUT OF TOWN
WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS FROM ABOUT DEC 1-25 FIRST WE HAVE ONE DINNER WITH THE CHILDREN AND MAKE A HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS CAKE,THEN A DINNER WITH EITHER ROAST AND RAVIOLI'S OR TURKEY. WHATEVER THEY WANT ME TO COOK.
THEN ANOTHER DINER IS THROWN IN THERE AT OUR CHURCH.
OH AND A CHRISTMAS PARADE IN A LIL TOWN
FOLLOWED BY A SOUP SUPPER AND HOMEMADE COCOA. THEN CHRISTMAS DAY, THIS YEAR WILL BE AT OUR HOUSE, SO IT WILL BE HAM & TURKEY AND ALL THE TRIMMINGS CORNBREAD DRESSING AND BREAD STUFFING.WELL I AM ABIT POOPED ALREADY JUST WRITING ABOUT IT LOL, I LOVE THE FAMILY GETTING TOGATHER. OF COURSE AT OUR HOUSE-- EVERY MEAL HAS AT LEAST 5-8 AT THE TABLE.

Italian Pannetone or Babka, lots of golden raisins in either with sweet butter. Tea for the kids, coffee for adults.

Lunch would be the main meal at 1pm, Roast Pork/Fresh Ham, black beans, yellow rice, salad or pork with applesauce, mashed, veg.
