Christmas Trip 2010

Hey gang

So based on my thread about eating around Huntsville during our Christmas visit I thought I'd give y'all an idea of some of the great eats we had on our way to and fro.

We started with a visit to the University of Michigan and my most favourite burger place on the planet. Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger. (http://xrl.in/6zxi)
You order your burgers as singles, doubles, etc. up to quints at which time they start on a new bun. I always get a quad which is 4, 1.5 oz. meatballs, smashed on the flat top, cooked and then piled on a bun. I get an onion bun, American cheese and today, salami. They also make kick ass onion rings.

Next on the agenda was a stop at Wallace Station in Kentucky. Just outside Lexington I saw this place on DD&D and had to visit. It's every bit as good as Guy says it is and the drive out there is magnificent. (http://xrl.in/6zxj)" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />
Mrs. Sippi's sandwich and my burger were both fantastic but the "Danger Brownie" was to die for. A chocoholic's dream." _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />
We ran up to Lynchburg and visited the Jack Daniels distillery. While in town we stopped off at a great little place named Cattywampus. It's an upscale, down home kinda place. Doing fried chicken and other favourites like that. On this day they had Jucy Lucy's as the lunch special and that was too hard to turn down." _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />
What really made me interested in the place was the warm skillet of corn bread and molasses butter they greet you with at your table. It's more of a sweet cornbread so not quite southern." _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" /> but it was the best I've had.
While in Huntsville we always have to stop at Dreamland. They get mixed reviews on various boards but I think they're fantastic. (http://xrl.in/6zxk)

One of the neatest features is the pit right in the dining room

On the way home we stopped first in Franklin and Dotson's Restaurant. Considered one of the old guard in Franklin it's a meat n 3 and is terrific.
They're famous for their cream pies and the chocolate version was fantastic.

Our usual stop at Skyline in Dayton is always nice. A 3 way with hot sauce is how I like it. (http://xrl.in/6zxl)

Our last stop was in Dearborn and Mati's Deli. Recommended by someone on another board this place is really cool.
It's in an old gas station and serves up some good deli. They get their meat from United Packers but cook it in house. My pastrami on rye with mustard and Swiss was good solid sandwich. The pickled hadn't pickled enough for my liking. It was a bit more like cucumber than pickle.

Well that's all for this trip. I'll report back again when we make our Spring trip. Hoping to try Blue Ash Chili in Cinci and put a bigger dent in my list of "100 things to eat in Alabama Before You Die."

The onion rings at Krazy Jim's look like they don't get overcoated with batter, which IMO is a good thing.  Will they cook them extra brown on request?

Mati's Deli reminds me of many childhood Lego construction projects.

I couldn't tell you about Blimpy Burger and the onion rings. It's so busy they might not. The line up is pretty much never less than 10 people. They have a regimented ordering system that really speeds things up.

Mati's was once a Shell station. It's odd because it has Art Deco in it yet isn't quite AD enough.

Anyway, here is my review of Mati's Deli in Dearborn. It really brought back great memories.

How was the Jucy Lucy? I've only had the pleasure of eating them locally at Matt's and 5-8 Club thus far, though I need to get to Blue Door Pub sometime. Was the one at Cattywampus any different than the MN standard stuffed-with-American?

I've never been to the Twin Cities so I can't compare. I can only say that this one was incredibly tasty. Good size and oozing cheese.
I don't remember what kind it was but I believe it was American. I'll post a picture when I get home.

    BTW, Cattywampus is now closed.

Brianne, this doesn't answer your question directly and my samples are terribly small, but compared to the legit MN Jucy Lucy I've had (Casper & Runyon's the Nook, which can't get rebuilt fast enough for my tastes), the ones around here are close but no banana.  I don't know what part they're not doing right, but the clean separation between the meat and cheese isn't there the way that MN does it.  MN for the win. :)
edited to add: I don't think Huntsville was in the storm area but I sure hope all the other Alabama RFers and their favorite establishments are doing okay today. :)

First off Nancy, thanks for the well wishes. My SIL has no power and a tree on her roof. No harm though so that's good.

Secondly, here is a picture of JL.

    American cheese for sure.
