Do they still make Chunky candy bars? I use to love those things. Something about the combination of chocolate, nuts, and raisins just tastes so good. I haven't seen them in ages. I buy Cadbury's Fruit and Nut bar when I get the urge now. I remember Chunky also had a version with cashews instead of peanuts at one time.

Thanks for the memories. I hadn't thought about Chunky's in decades. I was trying to remember who the character was who did their commercials. Thanks tiki.

I have a dim memory of Chunky being available in flavors other than peanut and raisin. Were there any other flavors besides peanut/raisin and cashew/raisin?

Yes they still make Chunky bars but for some reason they just don't seem to taste as good as when I ate them as a kid some 40 or so years ago.

Yes they made different flavors--including a solid chocolate--no nuts--no raisens.

I found some at the Meijer's store ( large midwestern super walmart type store) in an old time candy display. They also had maple and vanilla Buns, and a handful of other candies I hadn't seen in awhile. Bought a couple of Chunkies and found they don't taste as good as I remember. I guess I'll stick with my Cadbury Fruit and Nut bars.

I got to agree with Bubbles. When I was a kid, Chunky was the only candy bar that mattered. Now they're just not the same. But still good....

Now, HONestly, what DOES taste as good anymore ? Or is as big ?

                        Or qs cheap?

Remember when we had a nickel to go to the store and could pick up a bigger, better, IMHO, candy bar than what you get now for fifty cents (if you are lucky)

Almond Joy, and Snickers, and Payday are still good. . . . Smaller, perhaps, and more expensive but still good! The Heath toffee thing is another one that I think has slipped -- used to be my #1 favorite.

Yes they do. I don't know if you have heard of the store Dollar General and Dollar Tree, but they usually carry them. I think 2 for a 1.00. That was before the prices went up, especially the gas.

Is it my imagination or did the Chunky candy bar used to come as one big chunk instead of the 4 piece chunk in the photo posted above?

I just tried Chunky for the first time in years- was very disappointed. I didn't remember peanuts and the cholocate seemed to me to be dark chocolate in the past- now it was milk chocolate. Then I noticed it was now a Nestles product. Sure enough-- looked up the history. The Chunky of our youth was filled with cashews, brazil nuts and raisons. The reason it doesn't taste the same is that is isn't the same. Now it tastes like mixing up a hand full of Nestles chocolate, Goobers and a few Raisonettes. Boo to Nestles for buying up a product and dumbing it down.:(

Chunky, and many other "old" brands have been bought out, saved, if you will by Nestle, Hershey's and other big companies. While they have "saved" the brand, they never taste quite the same, since the new owners use their particular recipe of chocolate or fillings, and they are not the same as the original.
All of the "Wards" brand items, which I believe included raisinets, chunky, goobers, non-pareils, now are Nestle. And the Nestle chocolate is, and always has been sweeter, and creamier than the old Ward's was.
Other candies that are not quite the same include the "Peter Paul" brands (Mounds, Almond Joy) which are now Hershey - as are the old "Curtiss" brands - Baby Ruth, Butterfinger, etc. The old Henry Heide candies "Jujy Fruits" and "JuJuBe's" are now made by Farley-Sather, and they are not the same either. The Jujy Fruit green, which used to be a minty flavor is now a bad lime flavor. JuJuBe's are not as hard as they used to be either.
The good news, I guess, is that these products have been "saved". The bad news, I guess, is that they are just not quite the same.

"Candy Freak" by Steve Almond is out in paperback now. Almond gives some reasons why Chunky and others "just aren't the same" and how the economies of numerous communities have been harmed by big corporations buying out the small candy companies. But it's not (thankfully!) a political expose. It's a fond look at regional candy from the past and present. He likes big companies candy as well. It's a very entertaining book.

You know you can make something very similar yourself. Use mini-foil petite four liners. Melt chocolate almond bark by package directions, add raisins and chopped pecans, whatever you like the most of, and fill the cups about half-way. They harden. We make these around the holidays.

they are alive and well in Cleveland, Oh, we can get them anywhere, drug stores, gas stations, etc. no shortage. They are good.
BTW, Cadbury makes a Chunky, they call it a fruit and nut bar.
same thing and just as good.

That reminds me of another candy "Cup 'o Gold" that I spied at Fry's electronics. I guess I was nostalgic from my kid days going on my bike to the store and buying that and Chunky's. So I bought some Chunky's too. I found the Cunky at Long's Drug stores so I would imagine they might be in some major drug stores. Fry's Electronics (is a huge super-store) with 50 check out registers and a line of people snaking around an exit that is filled with candy, snacks and all kinds of goodies. It works, people have to stare at all these goodies while they wait to pay for their electronics. If you have your kids with you your done. You can't justify buying hundreds/throusands in electornics without caving in for a few treats for the kids (or yourself!).

                                                Hope you find the Chunky.

I remember these when they first came out, as a child in the 60's.
The commercial was a black & white cartoon of a ship (barge) loaded with a Chunky bar going under a bridge and the bridge had to increas its height and width to allow the LARGE Chuncky bar to pass... the words "Open wide for Chuncky... thick, rich, [something], {something], CHUNKY!" were sung while the bridge expanded to let the Chunky bar pass...
                                                  They were tasty...

I used to love Chunky's but they do not taste the same . It is obvious that the quality has dropped and the size is smaller. We can get them in West TN. at most Walgreen's and many other stores. I have also started eating the Cadbury Fruit and Nut Bar.

Our local Dollar General store in town sells the Chunky Bar 3 for a dollar. A matter of fact all the candy bars at the Dollar General are cheap compared to other stores. Two Hershey Bars for a dollar and so on. I have been buying the Chunky Bars and they are okay. I remember living in Philadelphia when I was younger and seeing on top of a factory a sign featuring the Chunky Bar.
