SB, I didn't dare click the link Jake left so I didn't know where it led.

I read about this and was surprised at the sudden closing. I mean the concept always sounded good. Unlimited pizza buffet, but the pizza was always so bland that you couldn't help but leave dissapointed.

Sorry to hear about the workers losing their jobs but can't say they will be missed by me.

      really?

how much pizza does one eat in a sitting?

I understand buffet service for large parties, thus allowing a wider variety of foods for a mix group of guests, but don't get it for other uses. For example, when I was teaching, I often brought my bus loads of students to Western Sizzler and such. This made it easier for me to control the cost of the trip and allowed for the wide variety of tastes. But honesty, I would never go to one of these places on my own or with my family. We don't need "all you can eat." Most of the time, when I order and entree, it's already more than I can eat. So, there's no need for a trough of food made available to me, most of which I won't touch.

Pizza buffet? Just order some slices, and boom, you've made your own "buffet."

        I agree...there is a wall one hits...hard.

Scorereader...is there still Armand's Pizza down in your neck of the woods? Back 25 years ago I would eat lunch at the one up on Wisconsin Ave because they had all you can eat pizza. Being poor, those all you can eat offers sounded good!

Their pizza was the ultra thick crust variety, so the third slice would go down like you were swallowing lead bricks....leaving one in a dough/cheese stupor all afternoon.

I never heard of Cici's until this thread was started, and I figured that they were out of state.  I peeked here:

          http://www.cicispizza.com/

...and found that there are three in town here.  I think I'll stick with the wood- and coal-fired pizza places in the highway near to me.

I also noticed that there is Cici's To Go take-out.  Is it all-you-can-eat take-out?  I have visions of hungry folks backing pickup trucks up to the door...

Boy does that bring memories. Back then I was into thin crust pizza and would go to the lunch buffet at Shakey's on East-West Highway, just off Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda and the Bethesda stop of the Red Line Metro. That was about the best of the WASHDC area Shakey's. I would also go there for supper when we were on business in the area and had no rental car. Since we was traveling by Metro, we could imbibe in the cheap pitchers of beer until we were well over the legal limit.

I guess I should preface this a little bit more. I am usually a very healthy eater who watches what I eat almost religiously....more realistically probably a litte too much. I work out 6 days a week and sometimes on those days twice a day. I really only allow myself to have 1 "cheat" meal a week so when I do get it I like variety as my usual diet consists of a lot of salads and a lot of chicken.

Armand's is alive and well. They still do the lunch buffet thing. Our office went once or twice to the one on Cap Hill, not too far from Union Station.

They're the only place doing "Chicago" pizza. So, they have a niche, but I vastly prefer Faccia Luna's brick oven pizza.

In many parts of this country away from the East Coast, you are not able to buy one or more "slices" of pizza; it is a whole pizza or nothing.  Thus, the only way to get to sample a variety of pizzas is to eat at a buffet.  Locally, besides CiCi's, Godfather's, Stadium Pizza and Pizza Inn offer pizza buffets (as well as selling whole pizzas to anyone who wants them).

I just went to their website; there is still a location in Springfield at 1985 North Bechtle Avenue as far as the Dayton area goes.

or go out with a large group and order different pizzas, and share.
and I would purport that all of those places you named are crappy pizza.
Find a college campus, and there's bound to be a slice place. Or, get a 1/2 and 1/2 pizza. Seriously, CiCi's is only marginally pizza.

Cici's here has all-you-can-drink Coke products for a flat price.  Most of the others I mentioned have free refills (which is the same type of deal as all-you-can-drink).
