The old telephone exchange thread made me think of this. Before there were zip codes, there were city codes. Such as, Indianapolis 19, Indiana. Do you remember yours?

I grew up in a small rural town in the 50's and 60's and we didn't have one.

I think the descriptive term was "Zone". Only major cities with multiple post-offices' within the city had 'Zones'. We were in a suburb of Los Angeles and did not have a zone, as we were served by a P O with the name of the suburb...Gardena.

Ours is still used. When the Post Office built the first Post Office in suburban Johnson County Kansas (outside Kansas City) in the early 50's and transferred all the mail for northern Johnson county from the main branch in Kansas City across from Union Station there were a half dozen small towns adjoining each other. They built the Post Office in Mission and designated that all addresses in these half dozen towns become Shawnee Mission even though no city by that name existed. When the Zip Codes came around, residents could use the actual name of the city that they lived in however the Post Office continued to accept the Shawnee Mission designation. More then once in the past few years I have had businesses cancel my order because they only recognize the actual city I live in or vice versa the Post Office name. Their computer systems cancel the order if it does not exactly match what their computers say my address is.

Los Angeles 34 which was changed to 90034.

Yes zone does sound more correct. It would appear that they turned them into the Zip Code as Indy, 19 became 46219. That I did not know.

Middle Village Queens was 79 and when they doled out zip codes it became 11379. Were the other 'zones' similarly converted?
