City Market in Luling

Hi, I need information. I had a recent BBQ disappointment. We drove through Luling yesterday and City Market was closed... I had made the mistake of looking at a website(apparently there is a Luling City Market in Houston) and saw that they were open on Sunday... Not so. I was so upset that I didnt pay attention to the hours. Does anyone know when City Market in Luling is open? Thanks a lot. Also, any recommendations for BBQ between Austin and Harlingen on a Sunday Evening say between 2pm-6pm? That is when we are usually headed home. Drove through Lockhart and none of the usual suspects seemed to be open at 3:30p on Sunday. Thank you ,Paul

I can't give you the exact hours, being a thousand miles away from Luling right now, but it's not a shock to me that they wouldn't be open on Sunday. Luling's not that kind of place. All those small towns in that area (Luling, Shiner, Hallettsville) tend to take the Sabbath seriously. For a long time, it was hard to find an open gas station through there on a Sunday, but now I hear that some of the grocery stores actually open for a while on Sunday afternoon. You could call City Market for the hours-- (830) 875-9019. Still have them on my rolodex. My family home was in Nixon (30 miles away from Luling) and when my grandparents went into the nursing home and I lived in Houston, I always stopped at City Market on Saturday for some BBQ and some Pearl beer for Granddad. Good times, good memories. Places along I-35 (New Braunfels, Seguin, San Marcos) are more likely to be open on Sunday. Here's a link to a recent article in the Houston Press on City Market in Luling versus Luling City Market in Houston. http://www.houstonpress.com/Issues/2005-05-26/dining/cafe_1.html

Thanks for the links, Good Info, I was surprised to see hours on Sunday and I should have looked closer. I will get there sometime, but I dont know when. It is about 5 hours to get there from the Valley... Oh well one of these days. Paul

Southside Market in Elgin is open on Sunday, but it is more east of Austin than south.

In Lockhart, both Smitty's and Black's are open on Sundays. But, yeah, finding great barbecue on Sunday can be a challenge. I often have that problem coming back from roadtrips to the coast or Valley. I'm going through all these little towns with great bbq joints and all of them are closed. Frustrating. Scott
