Civics Classes

Are civics classes still part of the public or private school systems? During the 60's and early 70's when I was in school, it was usually a jr and sr level curriculum that was taught independent of American history classes. During the mid 90's when my kids were in high school there was no such classes, although my girls attended private schools that still followed state mandated curriculum guidelines. The little civics education that they received was part of history classes with no direct emphasis on citizen's constitutional rights and responsibilities.

They haven't called it Civics for at least 25 years. Now it's a part of Social Studies in lower grades and Government in high school.
