Clamming on the Washington Coast

We have a 3 day razor clam dig this weekend....being a clamming virgin, I decided to give it a try this morning......
Success....Limit of 15 in about 45 min. Now to go clean them and make some chowder!

    Razor clams are one of my favorite foods.
      Slice them down the middle, clean them out, flatten and saute them in a little butter!  Let them stand out on their own.

    Oh wow...what a trip down memory lane! When I was five, we visited my cousins who live just outside Baltimore. Went clamming within view of the wild horses on Assateague Island, and it was fabulous! Apparently now you can't do it at all...probably because of people like us who were there for hours and came home with (literally) a bushel basket full. Who knew better in 1976?

    I thought razor clams were long and thin, like an old straight razor.

    I agree, those don't look like razor clams at all. Look yummy, though!

    We always went to Pismo Beach area and clammed for the Pismo clam. Also there was always a ton of abalone around Morro Bay. I remember when I was a young teen there were mtns. of abalone shell just N of downtown Morro Bay.

    Maybe some of you are thinking of east coast "razor" clams? We always called them jack knife clams, but some call them razor clams. They are much thinner  and smaller than those beauties you get there chef B!
     
    Never ate an east coast "razor" clam, not sure if they even do, but I find their shells all over the beach.

    Oh, my friend, those are works of sheer culinary beauty! Battered and fried they'd be nirvana......but only 15 are allowed?  Can I bring my Dog along to get another 15?  I would think 15 would be enough for a nice chowder for 2 people, but just barely enough for one fried clam platter
