Claudia Sander's Dinner House (Shelbyville,KY) Sat, 02/21/09 11:58 PM (permalink)
We have enjoyed visiting the Claudia Sanders Dinner House in Shelbyville,KY for many years. This is the place the Colonel built for Mrs Sanders to run while he went on the road hawking his chicken franchises. Rebuilt about 10 years ago after a major fire it is a 'genteel' sort of place noted for it's Bluegrass Horse Farm area roots. In addition to the usual (but cooked 'correctly' ) 11 herb and spice recipe chicken they have a full menu that includes several Family Style AYCE dinners of chicken and/or livers with the famous 8 veggies served over and over. Things like Corn Pudding, Stewed Tomatoes, Mock Oysters (eggplant cassarole), Glazed Beets are part of those wonderful side dishes.
On Sunday they also have a Buffet available as well as the normal dinner menu.  If you are ever in the area the CSDH is on US 60 about halfway between Franfort and Louisville. I recommend the place highly.
We had a review by the Sterns on the restaurant list, but it seems to have not survived the transistion to the new format. We hope to have it back on the list soon.

Al, I've driven past Claudia Sanders' Dinner House a few times over the years, but I've never given serious consideration to eating there before. The place looks inviting, but the restaurant's association with the Colonel and KFC always turned me off; a sad case of "roadfood prejudice". Thanks to your recommendation and those of a few other roadfooders, though, I've seen the light, and plan to give the Dinner House a try in the near future.

They do use the original recipe, but the Chicken comes out pretty fresh, and done the way it is supposed to be done. My favorite meal are the Livers. They are always excellent and when combined with those eight side-dish veggies, make a great lunch or dinner. They do a pretty good Hot Brown, and the Kentucky Ham is good too.
This is not a Chicken Stand. It is a very nice restaurant..Cloth napkins and very comfortable furniture. A good place for "family Sunday Dinner"

Al, since you said that CSDH uses the original recipe, I assume that means the Kentucky Fried Chicken that I loved back in the '60s. If it is, then this place is a "must-eat". The food at KFC 40 years ago was great; the chicken, the gravy, and especially the cole slaw- I loved everything there. Once the Colonel sold out to John Y. Brown and his partners in the mid '60s, though, everything started changing for the worst. The KFC of today is a bad joke, plain and simple.

I ate there about a month ago and posted a thread with pictures in the Trip log.

LOVED the veggies, especially the creamed spinach and the mock oysters. The chicken was great too.

            Aaron,

               Thanks for posting that link!
My wife also loves the veggies. For her the Stewed Tomatoes and the Mock Oysters are the top of the list. For me the Beets and Corn Pudding make the top. About the only thing I pass on is the mashed potato. Since they use a Milk-Gravy instead of a 'Chicken-Gravy', I don't mess with the potato. I do like to dip my chicken livers in a cup of the gravy though.

I was introduced to "White Chili" at this place as well. It is delicious as a warming appetizer! Think of a cup of White Bean Soup with chicken bits and some seasoning that is mainly black pepper and you have the general idea of what "White Chili" roots are based.
We also enjoyed a good piece of Apple Pie covered with a warm Rum Sauce after our dinner last week.

We are meeting The "Ayersians", Chris and Amy, there next Sunday for an afternoon dinner there. it should prove to be a fine Sunday meeting!

Al introduced me to this place several years ago and I have visited several times since then.  I have never been dissapointed.  Thanks Al as it is beautiful place and the food is very good.

Sounds like a pretty terrific restaurant, Al. I love chicken livers. In Dallas, there're only available, frozen. The markets stopped selling them fresh about 4-5 years ago.
And, unlike Claudia Sander's, they are near impossible to find on restaurant menu's in Dallas.

Boy, do I have egg on my face! It's obvious from all these posts that I very unfairly judged Claudia Sanders' place based only on her surname. Fellow roadfooders, I humbly acknowledge my flawed reasoning ( and hang my head in shame! ) I've got to get down to Shelbyville sometime soon and see just what I've been missing out on.

Based on your review, I ate ate there about five years ago and enjoyed the place, especially the vegetables.  Glad to hear that it is still good.

                      Bob,
There are those who automatically turn thumbs down on any form of KFC. Different strokes for different folks is a good watchword here. I don't buy KFC at 99% of the stands selling it anymore, either. I do recall how good it was 30 yers ago though...maybe my taste buds were different, or maybe it changed in the store...Who Knows. I won't badmouth Gov. John Y. Brown, as he is the guy who signed my commission and awarded me the title of Kentucky Colonel back in 1982. (BTW that is the same organization to which Harland Sanders belonged, and the source of his title of "Colonel"!)

The restaurant does serve chicken prepared in the same recipe, but It seems to have preserved the quality we noted from 'long-past' memories of Good KFC!!
An AYCE Chicken & Livers dinner gets you a couple of pieces of chicken and a dozen large livers, with the reorders available ASAP...plus the eight veggies served family style until you cry "Uncle"!

How's the gravy? That seemed to be one thing the old Colonel was real fussy about....

                        Real spuds?

For some reason The Dinner House uses a 'Milk Gravy' nothing like the stuff at KFC. I don't know if it is/was "Colonel Approved"?? It is ok for dipping the Livers, but it disappears on the Mashed Potatoes!!  I would prefer a decent 'Chicken gravy'...or maybe the stuff served with the Popeyes chicken ()

Sort of an image of a "Tall Boss Hog" from the Dukes TV show......

But to be serious for a minute-
The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels has thousnds of appointed member around the world. It is a valid charitable organization that does a huge amount of work here in Kentucky and surrounding areas. I do an annual donation to maintain my membership...and do have some items labeled with the title here at 'The Orchard'.

As I've said on other threads in the past, I'm pretty sure that the fried chicken recipe used at Claudia Sanders Dinner House is the same one that Duncan Hines consumed when he first encountered Harlan Sanders' restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky in 1939.  It was the inclusion of the Sanders Court and Cafe in Hines' 1939 edition of "Adventures in Good Eating" that put Harlan Sanders on the map, because in that day if Duncan Hines mentioned a restaurant in his restaurant guidebook, it almost always meant an additional $50,000 (in 1939 dollars).  I also believe that many of the other dishes that are now served at Claudia Sanders Dinner House were also first served at Sanders' Court and Cafe.

John Y. didn't directly ruin KFC.  He did, however, indirectly have a hand in its degradation of quality.  He sold KFC to Hublein.  From there, it was downhill all the way.

BTW, The Colonel sued John Y because he thought he'd been taken advantage of in their original agreement.  As it turned out, John Y had compensated the Colonel well beyond the contractual requirement, so the lawsuit went nowhere.  Apparently, the Colonel became bitter when Brown built it into a global giant.

There has been an interesting mix of politics and the Fast Food industry in Kentucky.  Mrs Sanders (after the Colonel's demise) was a very strong personality in the social/charity world in this area. KFC poured millions into the Kentucky Center for the Arts and other worthwhile cultural activities. Whenever Mrs Sanders made an appearance at Social gatherings her entrance would like 'Royalty' had just appeared. She would be escorted by several Security people and her Limo was accompanied by two Motorcycle cops whereever she went.
John Y was noted as a real Up and Comer in the early 1980's.  He ran into a brick wall after it was made public that he had lost over one million dollars in a single night in Las Vegas. The fact that it was his personal money made no difference to many of the folks in Kentucky, who seemed to think he was playing on their funds. His move to become a Vice-Presidential candidate in 1984 simply disappeared. I have noted that his son John Y 3 or 4(?) has run for state office in the last couple of elections. I don't know if he won or not.

The Sanders sold KFC in 1964. The Dinner House in Shelbyville operates using her name, but has no connection other than use of the recipe, to the YUM Corporation.

John Y III was Secy of State from 1996 to 2004, and ran for Lt. Governor and got beat in the primary.

Mayor Al and Louis, this information is fascinating, and I sure wish that I'd known this stuff when I was last in Shelbyville a few years ago. I know now that I cheated myself out of a fine meal. Remember that saying "when you assume, you make an a** out of you and me"? Well, I am now the self-appointed poster child for that bit of wisdom.

Thanks Jman,  I recall seeing some election commercials for John Y 3 on TV,  but didn't follow up on what happened to him (I live on the Indiana side of the River)!

Bob(NC), whenever you pass thru this area take the time to try CSDH. Note, It is closed on Mondays.

Not to denigrate CSDH (it's been quite a few years since we've been there -- it was before the fire -- but we enjoyed it when we did), but just as a point of information from someone who obviously knows Shelbyville well:  how is the dining room at the Science Hill Inn?  I haven't been there in probably 45 years or more (since I was a child).  I came across a good review of it online that appeared in the Courier-Journal last spring.  Have you been there?

I, too, have read nice things about the Science Hill Inn, but have not tried it personally.  I will put it on the list of places to try to get to in the coming year!

Is Roadfood having a dinner at Claudia Sanders on Sunday, or is it a private gathering?

                                                        Andrea,
A bunch of folks who happen to be in the Louisville area this weekend decided to get together for a Sunday dinner. This not an 'official' RF event, but I think everyone is in the RF group (or related somehow!).  You are certainly welcome to join us. I would love to meet you in person!! Ayersian (the two of them), Travelin' Man and a friend, and Janet and I will be at CSDH at 1PM. Let me know if you decide to attend and I will add your number to the total for a table.
