Thanks for the schematic of the levels of Hades, Grampy. It got me to thinking about our contemporary rivers - rivers of concrete called the Interstate system - and how they are so analogous to Dante's vision. The river Cocytus, the very lowest level of Hades seems to me to be a nearly perfect description of I-95 and its various permutations around the Washington/Baltimore urban area. One has to wonder if there is not some hidden message there in the chosen alias of our friend and frequent correspondent , i-95 ?

SJ: May I reference my old friend Ambrose Bierce on his definition of Philosophy from his Devil's Dictionary: A route of many roads leading from nowhere to nothing.

The Devil's Dictionary is one of my favorites - given to me by my father about 60 years ago. My father, a great admirer of AB, insisted that he never died in the deserts of Mexico - he just disappeared into a happy and anonomous existence among the natives and most likely lived to a ripe old age savoring the prank he had pulled on the literary world.

Women probably aren't allowed at the stonings in New Paltz, either. Gail has to rent a beard and speak in a low voice when she attends one. John blows the whistle. Jehovah!!!

i-95, you caught us up. That's our Town Supervisor (something like the Mayor of a township in NYState) - at least that's my image of him! And the German language is fitting - this place was settled by French Huguenots who had spent a few generations living in and around "Dei Pfalz", an island in the Rhine river. But, we do not have stonings. ( some of our citizens are frequently "stoned", but that's their choice). We do have marriages. We'll marry anybody to anybody, and we're all available for the wedding reception- this is a party town! Meowzart, I'm the one that wears the beard in this family !!!

So, according to Dante, the gluttonous are worse off than the lustful? I'd better put down this sandwich and get busy!!!

Dante's Inferno was a well known pizza parlor in Evanston, IL back in the early days.

I'm still looking for the "Republican Ring of Hell". Is it the sum of the other 9, or is It just called Texas?

I'm not sure what you are doing to these women, but I believe getting the "vapors" means you are about to faint and must find the nearest chaise lounge upon which to fold yourself into a graceful, ladylike, yet slightly winsome position.
