Little Pigs suffered a fire recently and is closed but rebuilding.  Hudson's Smokehouse closed their location on Knox Abbott, but just moved into an empty restaurant in the Harbison Blvd area next to the Sam's Club; I still prefer the original location on 378 in Lexington.  A new Rush's is going up almost across the street and opens in a couple of weeks.  The Triangle City Zesto's is still your best bet but they sadly stopped serving the baklava sundaes and shakes.  The Miyo's/M Cafe people opened a new location called M Vista--still pretty and still very good food, but certainly five dollars more than you need to pay for it.  I would still venture into anywhere with 'Taqueria' in the name--my favorites are Jalisco and Mi Pueblito--rather than the other Mexican chains in town.

So for barbecue, take a roadtrip to Shealy's and maybe check out Hudson's--even the Hudson's buffet is pretty good.

For fast food, be sure to hit Rush's for a chili cheeseburger and a milkshake.  Go to the Triangle City Zesto's for some fried chicken; I'm fond of the wing basket.  Their milkshakes are pretty good too.  Make sure to get to Rockaway's for a chili cheeseburger, and if hot dogs are your thing, Rush's, Edna's, or a location of Sandy's will do you fine.

Groucho's is good for a turkey sandwich with their 45 dip on the side.  You really cannot go wrong with the Publix deli either--chicken fingers or they put together a nice sandwich.  Oh, wait, Fifth Avenue Deli on Rosewood--we've dubbed it 'Ten Dollar Sandwich' but it's probably the best sandwich in town, and their ingredients are top-notch.  They make killer egg salad and an awesome Cuban.

When I go out for dinner these days, it's often to the Hunter Gatherer.  I hear they lost one of their cooks but so far they've held steady.  Or sometimes I go to Old San Juan on Two Notch Rd for some Puerto Rican fare--fried plantains, mofongo, and their delicious beans.

Asian, I'm going to Sun Ming in Irmo, or occasionally Sakura on Forest for a bento box lunch.  Right now we lack a really tight Thai place.  There's some B-quality Thai places.

Pizza, don't get me started on pizza.  (waiting for Chris to smile)  I've become a pretty fair home pizza cook.

Oh, two new places I don't think I've mentioned before.  The folks who operate the Mediterranean Tea Room on Devine (do not miss the broiled shrimp, only available at dinner--shrimp in a wine and butter sauce with tomatoes, olives, feta and jalapenos--yummm) opened a new joint on Taylor and Barnwell called Pita's and it's only open for lunch M-F, and it's terrific.  Well, I had a cheeseburger there I didn't like once.  But all their Greek stuff and salads are to die for, and if you happen to be lucky enough to walk in when they're baking, there's no better smell on the planet.

Breakfast is really the meal that Lizard's Thicket does best (don't miss the fish and grits); the Liz is a credible meat-and-three place but there are so many meat-and-three joints in the world that kick dirt in the Liz's face that I really can't blanket recommend it.  It's fine in a pinch.  Try the vegetable soup and grilled cheese.

Coffee joints, there's Cafe Strudel on State and another place two doors down.  Sadly the big green empire closed down Adriana's in Five Points after twenty years.  We do have several outposts of the big green empire.

    Enjoy your time in Columbia!

Sorry, Rockaway's for a *pimento* cheeseburger.  That was an egregious error.  :)

(you had no way of knowing I said something wrong)  Wait, actually you did, you're so good with the places here you probably knew Rockaway's was the pimento cheeseburger headquarters.  :)

I second Nancypalooza's recommendations of Rush's, Zesto's and my favorite in the whole world (because of the name, but the food's great, too) Lizard's Thicket.

Nancy, you forgot to warn Dave to steer clear of Crazy Maurice's place. That man makes Rush Limbaugh look like Al Franken by comparison.

All of the restaurants recommended thus far are great.  My personal favorite place in Columbia is Gervais and Vine in the vista.  It's a tapas restaurant.  It's certainly not 'road food' but it's a wonderful spot.  Be sure to get the fingerling potatoes with truffle aioli.

I also really like pasta fresca on forest drive.  Again, not traditional roadfood, but they make their own pasta and have a terrific cayenne cream sauce.

In addition to Grouchos, Andy's, which is run by a guy who used to work for Grouchos, serves up a great sandwich with a great thousand-islandy sauce.

Cock and Bull on Rosewood Drive has a shrimp burger that is NOT to be missed.  I crave this sandwich and never get tired of it.  THey have great raw fries and onion rings as well.

It's not really roadfood, but I have very fond memories of Nonnah's in Congaree Vista.

We had attended a wedding and reception nearby. We had erroneously assumed that a 4pm-8pm reception would include a meal, so we had eaten lightly before the reception, but all the reception served was rich appetizers.

So after hours of snacking on brie in pastry and bacon-wrapped scallops, I really wanted something to clear the taste of grease from my mouth. I didn't see what I wanted on the menu, so I asked the waitress, "What I really want is just a simple chicken salad. What would you recommend?" She replied, "Oh, we can do that for you."

The chicken salad was superb. It wasn't much more than grilled chicken, greens, and a little dressing, but it hit the spot perfectly, and it was splendid enough that I would have been happy to eat it even when it was not what I craved so much.

After that dinner, we were restored enough to consider rich desserts. We ordered the Orgeat Crepes Flambé, because I'm always attracted to flambéed foods that are intended to be flambéed. They were amazingly good, both light and rich at the same time.

Two years later, we sometimes look at each other, murmur "Nonnah's", and sigh wistfully that we're 600 miles away.

:)  You'll have to come back sometime Ralph.  Nonnah's is primarily known for desserts, and is still there.  The whole Vista area is worlds different from what it was ten years ago and hopefully will get even snazzier with time.  I hear nothing but good stuff about Gervais and Vine, but haven't been there personally.

You know, if somebody did wander into one of Crazy Maurice's joints at this point in time, I think they'd get driven off at least as quick by the fact that his food really isn't good anymore.  I think it's the karma.  I did notice my last trip to Charlotte that he's apparently branched up there in an effort to find someplace that his reputation doesn't follow him.

If I asked the question.....Where is the local favorite in or near Columbia, that has been around for ever, your father or grand father took you to when you were a kid, the food is great, and everybody goes there, from the mayor to the average joe. You know the "Landmark" place, with history going way back.  What would your answer be?

Drake's Duck In, on Main St.  But Edna's, Zesto's, and the original location of Rush's have all been there as far back as I can remember, which would be 1970.

^ local faves dave, I would definitely go to groucho's on harden street if if you are looking for a local favorite that has been around forever and the food is great.  Drake's Duck in has great fried chicken, but I don't think it's as distinctive as groucho's.

For exactly that reason.  There are ten places in Columbia that have better fried chicken.  Groucho's is decorated with all these great painted and hand-lettered signs of sandwiches they don't sell anymore.  :)

Raw fries are merely raw potatoes that are sliced thinly and fried as in home fries.

I guess I have been gone too long to be familiar with a lot of these places because I am getting a lot of negativity about Maurices which we absolutely loved with I was there in the early 90s.  I used to work at Providence Hospital and we would take orders to go there and it was so good.  That's kind of sad to think he's not a hot spot anymore.

According to The Dixie Index -- Recommended Southern Friendly Companies -- one of the problems involving Maurice's has to do with his Confederate sympathies.

It points out that a Southern company some may have heard of, Wal-Mart (and Sam's Club), pulled all the Maurice's products because of his racist sympathies.

Michael I'm not going to argue with you and I certainly appreciate the sentiment, but it does have me scratching my head a bit and going 'really?'

Maurice is pretty much radioactive here, and he brought it on himself.  If you go into Melvin's in Charleston, which is run by another branch of the Bessinger family, you will be greeted by a framed newspaper article in which they explain how distantly they are related.

I love the tree-lined residential areas and the old downtown, and the statehouse and its grounds are fantastic. And then there's this thing called a lake nearby that offers fantastic bass fishing.

As to Maurice's, well, every place has its burdens to bear.

Out by the fairgrounds?  I've never been there but it hasn't been there forever--you should try the Biscuit House as long as you're in the neighborhood.  Also you aren't far from Doc's, which is fairly new but I hear nothing but good stuff about it.  Old timers, didn't there used to be a place out in this area that would have made his 'everybody knows it, your dad took you there' cut?

Unfortunately the Biscuit house has closed.  You can thank the great University and it's need for football parking for that.

Bernie's is a GREAT Chicken joint.  It has excellent broasted chicken.  While not as good as Zesto's (IMHO) it is a close contender.

I rather enjoyed Maurice's the one time I was there a few years ago.  Yeah, he's still trying to win the Civil War but that's one of the things that makes his place unique.  That's what roadfood is all about.
By the way, his 'nanner pudding was outstanding.
