Sad news for those in the SE New England area. Commons Lunch in Little Compton, RI, (see review on the site) burned down last night. The owner has said he will rebuild, but the ambience will be tough to duplicate. Makes me wish i'd eaten there more often.

That's a shame. I had actually thought about going there last weekend. I've never been there before.

Does anybody know if they ever rebuilt after the fire? I had my first encounter with jonnycakes there in 2000 and really enjoyed the place.

They reopened a couple months ago. I haven't been back yet, but according to the news coverage all the regular customers are back and happy, so that's a good sign.

I had a terrific breakfast yesterday at Commons Lunch. I stuck with the basics and ordered the jonnycakes special. My egg and bacon were both fine and the jonnycakes were perfect.

From the outside, it doesn't necessarily look like a new building, but the inside is sparkling. And they also now have a small deck area for eating outside. As you would expect on a Saturday morning in the summer, they were quite busy. But, since there was a seat open at the counter, I was in and out in under fifteen minutes. Parking was a bit of a problem and required some improvisational skills.

Geez BB, Takeru Kobayashi has nothing on you. Ever thought about entering an eating contest?

(didn't your mom ever tell you to slow down and chew your food?)

                Larry-
You know what is so funny about you saying that is that I am absolutely the world's slowest eater! When I eat with others, I am always the last one done. But in this case, there were people waiting for precious seats, so I hurried a bit. And as thin as jonnycakes are, not a lot of chewing required.

Have you ever been to Yankee Doodle in New Haven? It is possible to get in and out of there in five minutes if you are so inclined.
