I thought it was just the Astroland amusement park.

It's just the Astroland portion that's closing.

Astroland Park, which is a relatively small area in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn has closed. The Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel, both of which have 'landmark' status will remain and will be part of the re-development of the area. Nathan's will remain open. No construction on the redevelopment is expected to begin prior to 2010. Go get that 'dog!

And good for you. Its well worth it, and much better than chain or grocery store, Nathans. As far as "what Coney Island is like," it is worth the trip to find out. Its a boardwalk, but to me it is unlike anyother that I've been to. That includes ones up and down the East and West coasts.
