On another thread I was involve in a heavy debate on where this recipe for the Coney Island Hot Dog started. I say that it started in Coney Island in Brooklyn NY. However there are speculation that the famous recipe was in fact created in the Coney Island of Cincinatti. I disagree, but I could be wrong... http://barbeque.allrecipes.com/az/CnyIslndSc.asp What do you think...

I know absolutely nothing about the specifics of Coney Island Sauce but I've printed the other recipe out you posted and will try it ASAP.

I'm inclined to agree with bxfinest on the probable source of the Coney Island or Texas hot sauce for hot dogs, but I'm not so sure of that recipe from allrecipes.com . It seems to me that the sauces I've had all contained some cumin and ground red pepper and frequently some nutmeg and/or cloves and cinnamon. And, around the northeast it takes the fine hand of a Greek immigrant to make a credible Coney Island sauce. If you want a great Texas Hot and you find yourself in the Hudson Valley, try one of these places: Kingston, Dallas Hot Wieners (2 locations in Kingston and 1 in Saugerties) ; Newburgh, Annas; Middletown, Coney Island hot Dogs (never been there, but I'll take Coney Island Lou's word that its great). I think the Texas Lunch is gone from Poughkeepsie - it was a great place in its heyday. And there's a diner on Albany Ave in Kingston that used to be called the Texas Lunch that recently upgraded and changed its name, but still has a very good Texas Hot. Cheers, John

I've read so many stories on the net that my head spins when I try to figure out where Coney Island started... My guess would be NY by the immigrants that showed up to this country during the late 19th and early 20th century... Then, in my unproven, untested, non-verifiable theory, moved westward to share this delicacy with the rest of the country. (And in theory, I thank them!). Now if your refering to Coney SAUCE, heck, thats another headache... I'm guessing by all the readings I've done that it started somewhere around the 1920's... I wish I had time to interview some of the old timers that may still know, or visit various libraries across the country to read some of their archives to figure this one out... But, I dont. Maybe over the next few years when more and more information is transfered from books to digital we can figure this one out with our computers... But until then, I'm just kicking back and enjoying them every chance I have!
