Coney Islands Tue, 05/17/05 11:14 PM (permalink)
These are served by the Coney Island in Sioux City, IA. A true coney island is a hot dog on a bun with their special chili, mustard, onion & alittle kosher salt! Stop by & eat one or a few!!!!!!

Actually, I might argue a "true coney island" is a hot dog purchased from a stand on the boardwalk at . . . Guess where!

On the other hand, what I would call a true Sioux City sounds pretty tasty and I'll look forward to having one if ever in that town.

And, "a true Coney Island", in the traditional sense, I am told, had only mustard when served by Nathan's on the boardwalk. It was only sometime after WW11 that chili sauce was used in Coney Island, Brooklyn,NY.

No, it's a hot dog or a frank or sometimes even a wienie- this is according to my friend who grew up within spitting distance of Nathans. On a previous thread someone argued, quite convincingly, that the term "Coney Island Hot Dog" originated sometime about a hundred years ago in the "Coney Island " amusement park in Cincinnatti, O.

          Cheers, John

ahhh....adding Sioux City to the very long list of places that have a 'Coney Island' hot dog place!

ALL of these places serve dogs just like you describe..and 100% of them were started by Greeks

I do believe our very own Coney Island here in Middletown NY has the distinction of being closest geographically to CI in Brooklyn....all of the dog/weiner places south and east of here tend to be Texas hots or other kind of dog houses...

A step further west....Grand Island Nebraska....a small family owned place has them also. Is called Coney Island. Started by Greeks.
Also serve great shakes and malts.
