Ha! I stopped at that Jersey Mike's last week on my way home from PA. I had tried their turkey grinder a while back at one of their NJ locations and I remember it being pretty good. However, like you, I was disappointed with the sandwich I got at the Brookfield location; certainly didn't live up to the hype on Yelp. Either they're not on par with other locations, or I've just gotten pickier.

Sad story - just read that Carbone's Market in Torrington is for sale. Anyone want to chip in and we can all run a sandwich shop?? http://www.rep-am.com/new...8a9260d08428352826.txt

Good heavens.  I am afraid that I will need to forego new grinder shops for the time being, in the interest of getting through as much of Carbone's menu as I can, as quickly as possible.

If you (and others) can find a way to get the funds, I'll gladly run it!  MH and I would love to live in CT and it would be a piece of cake compared to being executive chef in a busy restaurant!

The coworker that introduced me to Carbone's is going to do a group order for our department next Friday, and pick the grinders up on his way in.  It's going to be hard tearing myself away from that roast beef, but I have to try the rest of their menu while I still can.

Ok, so I lied - I ended up having one more different grinder before my Carbone's marathon, and it's actually the first place I tried when I moved here: Zerio's in Cromwell.

At the far left of the counter, you can just make out a whole pizza from which they offer customers free slices.  There seems something decidedly old-school about that to me.

I went for a steak and cheese grinder, adding peppers and onions:

It was everything that kind of sandwich should be, and far better than one I'd had from Nardelli's awhile back.  (Zerio's cooks the steak to order, while Nardelli's microwaves precooked refrigerated blocks.)  The bread was as good as it looks.

When I previously lived near the edge of Cromwell, Zerio's impressed me with their calzones, chicken parm, and pizza.  Some places do just one or two things well and phone the rest in, but Zerio's was good across the board.  I was pleased to see that they haven't changed!

Judging by looks, that would give any cheesesteak joint in Philly/S. Jersey a run for their money. And a free slice of pizza to boot! Looks great.

Probably my favorite grinder in CT is Vito's in New Haven. A great combination of fresh ingredients, quality cold cuts and very fresh bread make this place a winner in my book.

We did our Carbone's run today!  I tried their roast pork.

Just beautiful!

Every bit as tasty as their roast beef. A little drier, but that's to be expected with roast pork.

$7.50 for the 8" roast pork, then add a charge for the "works" treatment and tax, for $10.32 (written on the paper).

(Oops, I think technically they call it "the works" and not "everything".)  As far as I can tell, it includes lettuce, tomato, roasted peppers, onion, mayo, oil and vinegar, and salt and pepper.  There's provolone too, but that may be included with the standard sandwich, I'm not sure; I've never gotten anything from them without the works.

Followed Ketteract's lead and decided that giant grinders from Carbone's was a perfectly wonderful Valentine's Day treat. Tim got the 8 inch Genoa with the works, and I got the 8 inch Saturday only special ribeye with provolone, onions, and mayo. The ribeye was unbelievably tender - not a single "bite down and pull out a giant chunk of meat" occurence (at least in the first half - the other half has to wait until tomorrow - the sandwich was 1 1/2 pounds).

Oh lord. That ribeye looks delightful. I didn't even know about that. What time did you go?  We're getting our thousandth snowstorm in two weeks so I haven't felt much like traveling today...

We were there around 130, before the snow started piling up AGAIN. Bit of a slow drive home but sandwiches travel well.

Actually ... is it me, or are those much lighter on the meat than what Carbone's usually does?

Ketteract - Not sure, as we have never had these particular grinders before. There is a posting on yelp of what appears to be a Genoa grinder and it looks similar sized. Perhaps depending on the meat there are varying "stuffed" levels? Tim still proclaimed it fabulous, and thought more genoa would just overwhelm the sandwich. The ribeye is a Saturday only special, I thought it had just the right amount for the sandwich, but have no prior history for comparison. The Genoa was 1lb 14 oz, and the ribeye 1 1/2 lbs so both were certainly substantial!

All of those sandwiches from Carbone's look completely amazing.

The nearest thing we probably have in Georgia to y'all's experience is probably E. 48th St. Market in Dunwoody, and you've got me wanting to go that way for supper something fierce.  Soon.

I don't suppose that location is walkable from MARTA? I stay in Perimeter Center area a lot but it's too far for hotel shuttles I think.

Actually, yes - MARTA's # 150 and # 132 buses go right by that shopping center.
