Cooke's In in Huntington Fri, 06/19/09 1:33 PM (permalink)
I passed by today and it looks like they are closing. Tomorrow (6/20) may be their last day.  The reason stated is that she is retiring.  I know Scott_R has posted about this place.  Unfortunately, I never did get to stop there.

Really? what about Huntington Ct. or Huntington Ca. or probably a lot more Huntington's? NY may be a lot of things but contrary to popular belief it is not the center of anything.

The reference to Scott_R should have given you a clue. He is Mr. Long Island.  Sorry, I should have known better; my daughter-in-law is from Huntington Indiana.

It most certainly is, and I can prove it!

1976 huh, a little out of date dontcha think? and as an aside maybe you should call an arborist to help you with that "stick" problem.

I'm certain that you're saying that in a light hearted, good natured, gentle "ribbing" kind of way, I can't imagine that you would mean that as an insult without any provocation...

Yes I am WJ, this new format here I don't know how to put the smiley's in, nothing bad on you dude and if you percieved that I insulted and or was over the top rude I do offer my apology, with one exception, NY is STILL NOT the center of ANYTHING especially that certain BB team.

                      No problem

I'm just trying to be funny with that old New Yorker edition, I actually remember when it first came out and I was just a kid then!

I happen to like that certain baseball team, but I'm not saying anything because they've been having a really bad year....Ok, actually they've been having a really bad decade!

Darn I thought it was WV too.  I was hoping for some good recs there - The times I went I ate Shoneys and Damons.  Even back then I shoulda known better lol.

The best pizza in town was Papa Johns - but considering the McDonalds were still serving Pizza there like a decade after stopping in most places, that isn't saying much for the Huntington WV pizza scene

As far as NY, I have so many places I need to eat there at some day.  But that will probably be quite some time out in the future years. Sad that one fewer roadfood joint will be there  waiting for me.

Now we all know that Huntington, IN is the center of the BPT (Breaded Pork Tenderloin) universe.  Nick's Kitchen is located right down town, and for over 100 yrs now.

Nick's Kitchen's BPT is awesome, and so is the "hoosier" sugar cream pie.

NascarDad, Huntington WV isn't much of a pizza town, but it's one hell of a hot dog place. Stewart's, Frostop, Sam's... throw a rock in any direction and you'll hit a hot dog stand. In Huntington, chili slaw dogs reign supreme.

My favorite would have to be Huntington Beach CA...or a visit to the Huntington Art Gallery (Pinkie and Blue Boy reside there) and Gardens in San Marino CA, Home of the Rail Mogul of California Henry Huntington.

But for a BPT I join the vote for the Hoosier version...and make Nick's a stop when possible!

The Cooke's In was great- the owner, Juanita Cooke, was a school teacher and she often sang at dinner on weekends when they would have a pianist. Cornbread, colards, sweet potato fries , salad , this dense corn oudding and home frieds can with each entree.  She had great jerk chicken and fish and fried chicken.
It was truly a one of a kind place- very personality driven, so nothing could really ever replace it.  I hope juanita enjoys her retirement, but we'll miss her and the food
