Davydd, I forgot to say, that hotdish on a stick is pretty ingenious--love the COMS dip.

Harriet, did you use a t-square to line up those tots?  That's some righteous linearity right there.  It looks scrumptious.  What did Brian think?

Listen, before I met Julie I'd never heard of hotdish or baaaaaahrs, which is the other Minnesotan joke-but-not-really specialty.  I don't think they really broke any new ground with variations on hotdish (which I would have called casserole up til then) but there are varieties of baaaaahrs that I never came across before up North.  With every kind of cereal known to mankind.  And you actually see those in bakeries and the like.  If you want to get your panties in a knot about something Dale, you should concentrate on the baaaaaaaaahrs.

It's funny you should ask about the t-square. I was a drafter (did technical drawing) for the phone company once upon a time, so that, coupled with my slight OCD and a-retentiveness, might have played a role. Um, I'm VERY near and dear to someone who DOES use a t-square to wrap his Christmas gifts! It's harmless, so I don't care. What did he think, you ask. Well, since he does have that thing where he doesn't really like the food to touch or like potatoes mixed in with the meat, I wouldn't make it constantly, because I'm just sensitive to his...stuff that he likes or doesn't like.
My daughter, on the other hand, went just insane for it and wants me to make it again. Hell, she's almost 21, she can make it herself!

I've got the feeling that "baaaaahrs" are like Rice Krispie treat-type things. Would that be close?

I know that the tater tot casserole is the favorite meal consumed by the Duggar Family.. you know, that family that wont stop having children.. It is used to be 17 and counting, now its 20 and counting..

I happened to surf thru the channels one night and happened upon them making it....
They got nothing on you, Nancy!

Now you know what Hotdish is, roossy! Remember you asked on Facebook? I guess it's not something that'll make you have tons of babies, though, thank G-d.

No, baaaaahrs are a little more involved--before I met the inlaws I would have made the same Rice Krispie assumption, although I really suppose they're the same thing: cereal + goo + heat + chocolate + cooling.  My SIL's favorite goes like this: you warm up some peanut butter mixed with Karo light corn syrup and butterscotch chips, mix in a whole bunch of Special K, and spread this in a pan while still warm.  Then you pour a bag of semi-sweet morsels over it, and cover the pan (the chocolate chips melt and make a 'frosting' layer).  Incidentally, she has a metal baaaaahr pan with a snap-on metal top, engraved with her married name, that she received as a wedding present.  They are not messing around with the baaaaahrs up there.

Hold your horses, dude!! My mom's recipes are not in the place they were as they are getting new flooring this week. Also I am typing this exactly as it's written. I would use butter today, no trans fat.

                Countdown Bahhhhhhhhhhhhhrs

                Crust:

                1/2 c oleo
                1/4 c brown sugar
                1/4 c quick oatmeal
                1 c flour

Cream ingredients for crust. Add 1 tsp water. Pat down & bake @ 350 degrees for 10 minutes in a 9x13 pan.

                Filling:

                2 c powdered sugar
                2 T milk
                1/2 c oleo
                3 T peanut butter

Cream ingredients, pour over hot crust & spread. Cool.

                Topping:

                3/4 c peanut butter
3/4 c chocolate chips & butterscotch chips (more chocolate than butterscotch)

                Melt & spread over topping.

My mom always served these chilled. Basically a peanut butter cup with a crust, but better.

I can get more now that we know where her dessert recipe box is. Baby Food Bars (baby food carrots & cream cheese frosting), Mounds Bars, Lemon Lush bars, etc. Speak up if you want one of these, I don't see her much during the workweek.

Alright kids, here is another recipe. This is from my mom's aunt, a real live 50's housewife!

                  Scotcheroo Bahhhhhhhhhrs

                  1 cup sugar
                  1 cup light corn syrup
                  1 cup peanut butter
                  6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
                  1 6oz package chocolate chips
                  1 6oz package butterscotch chips

Bring sugar & syrup to a boil in a 3 qt saucepan. Remove from heat. Blend in peanut butter, then Rice Krispies. Press into buttered 9 x 13 pan immediately. Melt over hot (not boiling) water, chocolate & butterscotch chips. Spread over top and chill 5 minutes or until top is firm. Cut into bahhhhhhhhhrs.

My aunt who makes the Scotcheroos has the same pan!!! Different name though.

We do one with green food coloring mixed into the melted butter in a saucepan, then add the marshmallows & when they melt, add clear vanilla extract.

Then instead of Rice Krispies, you do Corn Flakes. You can shape them (with buttered hands!) into little wreaths for Christmas. We decorate them with cinnamon hot candies for the holly berries.

Do not EVER eat the above concoction while making them. You won't be able to stop.

I like the Scotcheroos recipe the best. I don't like peanut butter in recipes, so - well, I think Scotcheroos can probably be looked up as well and made. But this is like a Minnesota food thread...I'm sure my former FIL is smiling from up above...the old b*stard.
