Cool Hot dog history purchase! Sat, 08/9/08 7:57 PM (permalink)

I posted awhile back about a copper hot dog steamer used on Coney Island in the early 1900's that I bought on ebay.I thought that was pretty cool, but I just topped that this week.It is perfect timing too as I am completing the total restoration of one of my Waymatic concession trailers that will be selling grilled Sabretts, sausage and peppers,Italian hot dogs,Sabrett corn dogs, and fries.I'll be selling coffee and drinks also.Well...Let me tell you what I bought....
I was cruising Ebay last week, and just before I was going to bed I was checking on Hot dog equipment etc.. I came across a gas hot dog flat grill with a glass sneeze guard and hand painted "Frankfurters" sign on the front that was custom made for the filming of the "Honeymooners" episode #33 Hot dog stand filmed in October 1953. Ralph and Norton open up a hot dog stand in Jersey somewhere on route 22.I could not believe I found this.I wanted to make sure it was authentic so I emailed the seller, who supplies props to the tv and movie industry. They bought out Kabrams supply which was the largest supplier of props to the movie industry in NYC,and supplied the Honeymooners show with many of their props. The grill was in the companys storage for over 50 years and was in really nice shape, and comes with a letter of authenticity from the company that it was used in the filming of the Honeymooners....How cool is that! I went on You tube and looked up the episode and watched it online and it shows the hot dog stand and the grill on the left side of the set,it's actually a pretty funny episode. Here's the crazy part .They were asking only $350 or best offer!! I offered $275 and they did not respond,so I just hit "buy it now" because I did not want to lose it.I went to pick it up yesterday, and they told me since I was paying cash they would take the $275 I offered!! I can't tell you how cool it is to own a piece of tv and hot dog history like that ,and it is perfectly functional and cleaned up really nice(it was dusty and dirty from being in their warehouse for over fifty years) I was polishing the stainless steel today like a guy would polish a Rolls Royce! I can't wait to finish my trailer and setup the grill in there and make up a little display showing the grill being used by Ralph and Norton people can read while they waiting for their hot dog being grilled on a piece of history!!

I'm working on getting a very busy spot in North Jersy that I don't want to disclose yet(still in negotiations).I landed a spot in Marshalls creek flea market a few years ago but it didn't work out,too much drama and bickering amongst food vendors, and that's not my style.I have a friend that does very well there ,and I really wanted to set up there. It took me a while to get a spot amd approved, but I had a beef with a crybaby A#@$%#@ vendor there, and knew my lack of tolerance for clowns would have got me in trouble,so I told them to stick their spot.I'll post my spot when the deal is done.

I'm not good with that kinda stuff.I let my stepson do the computer stuff that requires more than tapping on keys, and he's not around right now.If you want to see it go on ebay and type 200207601422(auction#) into the search bar and the auction with pictures will come up.You can go on you tube and type in Honeymooners hot dog stand and watch the video and the grill is shown in part 3 and part 4.

Great!! Thanks for the link!!The fuzzy stuff on the glass in the sneeze guard is tape securing the glass to the metal frame so it does not fall out when being moved.I have to take some pictures of it because it looks way nicer in person, especially after I polished all the stainless today with jewelers rouge polish,it cleaned up really nice, and really shines.I'm taking the grill top plate to a company to polish it to a mirror finish, and removing the original glass and putting it away for historical value, and having new glass cut for it so the whole thing looks like new, even though it's over fifty years old.
