Corned Beef & Cabbage On New Years Day Sun, 01/1/06 10:10 AM (permalink)
We have this every year on New Years day, I don't know if it is just a tradition in our family or if others also have it...........We usually have boiled potatoes with it. We like it but usually only have it this one time a year! No special recipe, just boil the corned beef, cut up a head of cabbage adn add it along with some garlic salt and boil.

So if you don't have this, do you have anything special on New Years Day?

Mamaw Smith bought four heads of cabbage at the local grocer for $2.00. She cooked them with the ham bone that was left over from the Smithfield ham with bone. She used some butter and a small amolunt of butter and onion and garlic.

Very good but it does create some problems.

I get depressed if I don't have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day. However, I'd certainly be open to having it on New Year's Day also.

Though, I'm deciding right now, after having feasted on everything New Year's Eve, what might be the best food to begin the New Year with.

In any case, Happy New Year to all, wishing good health and peace of mind in the many years ahead.

P.S.--Only 119 days until the Great Western New Jersey Hot Dog Tour of 2006.

Today i'll do fresh SC shrimp on the bbq.Deviled eggs, pickled herring and some roll of cheese with prosciutto over spicy mustard on the little party ryes.I'm sure we'll be having jasmine rice also.We just returned from SC but Collards are the food of there. For me, it's a New Year but since my wife is from Shanghai we kinda do a little of everything as we'll celebrate later this month.I have a great Irish place less than a block from here that does corned beef and cabbage, but i'm sure they're closed today.Sounds good though!

This my 26th annual New Years Day open house. Started as an AM party, then morphed into an afternoon affair. Blackeyed peas & collards, of course, for good luck are indispensable for us southerners. Rest of the menu (which only seldom changes):

          Sausage & biscuit
          Cassoulet
          Lasagna
Smoked ham (alternates between city & country ham)
          Smoked turkey
          Potato salad
Pork barbecue (done during the fall, then frozen)
Various desserts, including cheesecake, pecan tassies, cookies, etc.

Bloody marys, milk punch, wine, etc.

All but the ham are homemade, including the confit for the cassoulet.

          Happy New Year

Just pulled a big pot o' hoppin' john of the stove. Blackeyes, ham hocks slow cooked for 3 1/2 hours with enough rice to make it all so creamy. Happy new year to all.

It may be the volume of cabbage that you are eating..............usually one head does it around here!

Mamaw Smith did not cook all four heads of cabbage. She is a bit tight with her money. She only cooked one head of cabbage today. I am sure that she will do more next week plus make some cole slaw.

Am I too late for dinner?
