Thanks so much for earlier suggestions. Any last minute thoughts on bars and restaurants around Lafayette? I can already taste the Dixie, and I'm still here in Virginia.

Question is "how could you go wrong in Lafayette?" Do a quick search of past suggestions resident on this site - there are many. Have fun. jm

That's not "Dixie" you can taste, it's "Cajun"! What a great place to find new Roadfood...have a great time!

While in Lafayette, check out some of the Creole places. The food is a little more elaborate than most Cajun cuisine, but no less wonderful. Grits & Grillade (Gree-yod) & any kind of fish Courtbouillon. Redfish & catfish are common (the catfish version can be kind of sketchy, though, especially if the fish are farm raised. Opelousas catfish are the best!).

Just typing that gets the blood flowing. I only live about 3 hours from Lafayette, and don't get there nearly enough.

Enjoy your trip to The Bayou State!!

Prejean's is certainly a must stop. The food is great. Prices are reasonable and portions are large. We live in MO and get there a couple times each year.

I bet he means "Dixie" beer. My favorite is "Dixie Blackened Voodoo".

I can't speak for Lafayette itself, but if I were heading to south LA now, especially if I were driving and, thus, probably passing by New Orleans, I'd detour to visit Uglesich's in New Orleans one last time (see http://www.bayoudog.com/articles/restaurants/end_of_the_lines_for_uglesichs.php ). This Mecca of cajun-creole chow may close soon and IMHO nobody who wants to experience how good this food can be should miss it.

Grew up & live in Lafayette

Forget Prejan's, just a tourist trap! In Lafayette proper may I suggest.

Seafood-Don's( best gumbo ), Charlie G's or Riverside Inn
Poorboys- Chris's on Jefferson or Pinhook
                Pizza-Alesis on Johnson
                Mexican- Lafonda
                Steaks-Ruth Chris and or Strout's
                Breakfast-Dwyers downtown on Jefferson

                outside Lafayette

                Abbeville- Dupris or Blacks

                Henderson Robins
's or Pats on Waterfront-both great Seafood

You might want to try Poche's just north of Breaux Bridge. Poche's is a grocery store and butcher shop with a nice dining room on the side. Plate lunch specials (my favorites are on Saturday - Pork Back Stew and Stuffed Pork Chops) are served during the day. You can also load up on some good sausage up front.

Joe's Dreyfous Store is great in Livonia - former general store converted into a restaurant.

Out west, the Frog City Diner in Rayne is good eats as well.

The Sundancer definately suggest Prejeans. I have been there several times and it is always excellent. It is a huge place and their quality is always good.

While in Lafayette, stop at the local grocery store and buy some Mello Joy Coffee. It is only available in that city and it is good. I bought Mamaw Smith 15 pounds of if the last time I was in Lafayette. It is an old brand and great. Get the dark roast. It is cheaper at the grocery stores.
