Creative/sneaky ways to use Soy

This really isn't a Roadfood topic, but here goes. I am a lone woman in household full of boys. (Including my better half.)

My dilemma: Their diets - especially the two youngest - are horrid. It's not for lack of trying to get them to eat good stuff. I cook from scratch (mostly), I buy fruit, tons of veggies, and soy products, which I have become accustomed to, and have learned to incorporate into my daily diet.

However enamored I have become of the benefits of soy, my kids staunchly refuse to touch the stuff, or even try it. Would anyone have suggestions how to "sneak" soy into my kids' diet? They are 11 and 13 years old.

    Hmmm, I recommend you take a sculpture class. Then you can go home and and mold said soy products in to little oreo cookies (use food coloring to make it lifelike) !


    By the time they pop them into their mouth and chew, you will have them 95% committed !!!


    Of course I could be wrong !!!

    Y'know, I've even tried that - I love the stuff, and I think the 8th Continent brand chocolate is the best tasting one. Tried to get #2 Son to try a tiny sip - no go. I honestly don't think he would be able to tell the difference!

    What about if you put some tofu in some summer rolls? They are fun to eat, and the flavor and texture would be lost on them with all the veggies and maybe some spicy peanut dipping sauce.

    Can you make a smoothie out of soy milk? That might lure them in...

    I've used the vegetable protein crumbles you find in the frozen food section to cut the amount of fat in sloppy joes, chili, etc. If you use it half & half with the meat of choice, it's really not so bad. Used to do this when I had to watch the fat content for my Mom.

    Silken tofu sneaks into smoothies, shakes, and cream pies well. I chop tofu up very fine and put it into pot pies. I was once wary of tofu, but the deep-fried tofu from Chinese places is what finally won me over. Order Chinese food and have one tofu item there for them to try without pressure when they are ready. They might surprise you.

    You might try a bowl of salted, roasted soy beans sitting on the table for snacks. I like them a lot, and if the kids actually like them, they might be persuaded to try different soy products.

    My favorite hiding place for soy is frozen, thawed, and crumbled tofu as part of the filling for tofu-cheese enchiladas. You can't really see it because of the cheese.

    I will try the above suggestions, especially the smoothies! That should work the best. I remember when I was little, I caught my mom slipping an egg into a homemade milkshake before blending it. Have you ever heard of anyone doing this?

    Good news: My kids did manage to eat a fresh spinach and tomato salad this weekend. Hey, it's a start!

    Try Edamame - Japanese soybeans - we love 'em.
    1 pound frozen soybeans
    1 teaspoon sesame oil
    1 teaspoon kosher salt

    Place the soybeans in the top of a steamer set over a pot of simmering water. Steam until tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and toss with the sesame oil and kosher salt. Serve warm.
