We keep saying we're going to cut Gourmet. We have 15+ years "archived" and they rarely have recipes we'd actually cook anymore. But every now and then there's an article we really enjoy and we end up renewing. Cook's Illustrated is the only other one we get at home, and there are recipes from it we use every week. My Wife does get Living Simple, Simple Living, whatever it's called as a gimme at work. It's like the old Martha Stewart Living "Lite." We definitely wouldn't pay for it. (That's actually "Real Simple." Shows how much I'm impressed by it.)

I get Cooks Illustrated The Country one from them Taste of Home (ToH) ToH's Simple and Delicious ToH's Cooking for 2 ToH's Light and Tasty Can you tell I like Reiman Publications' Magazines? If the people at Cook's Illustrated put out more magazines, I'd have to subscribe to them as well. Only problem with them is the hardbound volume at the end of the year is the same price as a year's subscription, and I'd really rather have that format. It keeps everything together so neatly, but you can only access the online extras during the months the magazine covers. Alice

Just Bon Appetit and Sunset (if that counts as a culinary magazine). I occasionally buy Gourmet if it looks interesting. Recently picked up Rachael Ray's and Paula Deen's new magazines out of curiosity, but don't plan to subscribe to either

Bon Appetit, Taste of Home, Food and Wine, and anything else that I happen to see at the store that has recipes I can use. Food and Wine has become entirely too pretentious, the letter from the editor, Dana Cowin, every month, just showcases how rich she is and where she can afford to go. The food she mentions is sometimes just plain silly. And there are way too many ads to wade through. But I did get a good recipe in F&W from an article on Bobby Flay--a peach ice cream with bourbon and maple syrup. Can't wait until the fresh peaches are here.

I have subscibed to Gourmet since about 1975. I think I've saved every issue, why I don't know, since I don't have indexes for a lot of them. However, some of my favorite recipes are contained in a choice few that I keep handy.

I've let my Cook's Illustrated subscription lapse, but I took that for a few years. I also used to love Simple Cooking, not a magazine but a newsletter, by John Thorne. John Thorne became my "hero" a number of years ago when I read "Outlaw Cook", and I realized that being an untrained maverick in the kitchen was OK. (To paraphrase Monty Python, "I'm an outlaw cook and I'm OK.") It appears that Simple Cooking is not being published anymore. Anyone have any insight on that?

I get way too many. I need to cut back. I'm not planning to renew Cook's Country and Cooking Light. Cook's Illustrated Cook's Country Rosengarten Report Cooking Light Eating Well Kitchen & Cook (a newsletter from the Culinary Institute of America) In addition, my sister passes on her copies of Bon Appetit and Gourmet.

John Thorne does have a website at http://www.outlawcook.com/ but the "current issues" of Simple Cooking posted there are hardly current and neither the "Contact Us" nor "Subscribe" links work.

Saveur. That's it. I don't even get Food Arts anymore. I keep forgetting to re-subscribe. Sometimes I'll buy a Food and Wine at a newstand. Saveur is by far my favorite. I've subscribed to it since the very first issue, which featured Oaxacan moles.

Well, welcome to you, sinkiller. I forgot about the Williams-Sonoma catalogue, I get that too. Also the Penzey's Spice catalog, with lots of good recipes and great quality spices. We are fortunate enough to have a Penzey's close to us here in the Pittsburgh area so we don't have to pay their fairly heavy shipping costs. You can get a catalogue too, at www.penzeys.com.
