DC Cafeterias

I came across this long list of DC cafeterias from a guide produced in 2002 for students visiting Washington, DC. Having moved here in 2002, I have not had seen many of these cafeterias, much less tried any of them. I imagine some of them are closed, but am posting the list to see if anyone in Roadfood land has had any experiences at any of them - good or bad. All States Cafeteria, Inc. 1750 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; (202) 298-8505 Bassin's Cafeteria. 511 14th St., NW; (202) 628-1441 Cafeteria Five Hundred, Inc. 500 12th St., SW; (202) 484-9339 Chamberlin Cafeteria. 819 15th St., NW; (202) 628-7680 G & I Cafeteria. 1369 New York Avenue, NW; (202) 635-0300 Holloway House Cafeteria. 711 14th St., NW; (202) 393-1450 Kitcheteria. 11th and E Streets, NW; (202) 628-8149 Linda's Cafeterias. 1819 M St. NW, (202) 331-9897; 1348 Connecticut Ave. NW, (202) 833-1621; 1701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, (202) 298-6504. Longworth Cafeteria. 1800 G St., NW; (202) 659-2057 Metro Market. Offers virtually every type of carry out food. International Square. 17th and H Streets, NW Murray's Cafeteria. 2001 Georgia Ave., NW; (202) 483-6611 Nickey's Cafeteria. 521 G St., NW; (202) 737-4818 Rothschild Cafeteria. 1030 15th St., NW; (202) 296-5797 Sholl's Colonial Cafeteria. 1990 K St., NW; (202) 296-3065 Shrine Cafeteria . National Shrine Immaculate Conception, 4th St. and Michigan Ave., NE; (202) 526-0595 Union Center Cafeteria. 825 North Capitol St., NE; (202) 638-5735 Wax Museum Cafeteria. 5th & K Streets, NW; (202) 628-6492 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS-MADISON BUILDING-top floor At most government agencies, the capitol, and the museums there are cafeterias. Some of these are not open to the general public during certain hours.

Library of Congress is a bit pricey. I eat there most every day. (I get prefered pricing) Better food and prices in Longworth House Office Building Cafeteria. I definately recommend Longworth's cafeterai. The Shrine Cafteria is a good one too. And they accomodate large groups well. I've seen them handle multiple bus loads of both teeens and adults. Plus, the Shrine is a great place to visit. Very different, and more ornate than the National Cathedral. For school groups, I like the eateries at Union Station and the Old Post Office Pavillion. When I was a teacher, I took kids to the Old Post Office. They loved it. Both are a sort of food court, rather than a cafeteria like Longworth and the Shrine. Some of the other city cafeterias are very small for large groups. They're really lunch buffet places, and seating is cramped during business lunchtime (12-1:30) and you may not be able to sit eveeryone if you have more than one charter bus load. Note: the Library of Congress Cafeteria opens to the public at 12:30pm for Lunch, giving employees a jump on the tourists.

Sholl's closed several years ago. Too bad. It was a roadfooder's haven.
