Dang, a really goot bottled sauce! Tue, 07/11/06 11:41 AM (permalink)
I was at the Tannersville (PA) outlet stores over the weekend, and got sucked into the Harry & David's outlet (go figger, huh). I picked up a bottle of traditional bbq sauce and doggone it, it was really good, very oniony and peppery, no liquid smoke flavor, more tomatoey than sweet (but still somewhat sweet).

Honest to god, it was so good I put it on my NY strip steak and on my fried potatoes.

My favourite is Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory & Brown Sugar. I like my sauces sweet and unlike some others I don't mind liquid smoke.

    Enjoy

I read in todays paper that Budweiser is getting into the Q sauce busniess. It was reported that it will be finding it's way to a grocery store near you in the next few weeks. Why don't these conglomerates stay to what they do best. I'm sure this is really going to improve their bottom line. Chow Jim

I agree with Davwud - If I don't make my own sauce, I normally use "sweet baby ray's". For a commercial sauce, it is rather good. Of course, for my own meat I would heat it up some, but wife and others like it plain.

I live in St Louis, and yes, I picked up a bottle of the new Budweiser BBQ sauce. Hmmmm...not sure about it...has an odd taste to me. It's got a little spice to it (which I like) but it didn't make me want to slather any on some of my ribs I had just smoked. There was also a basting sauce by them as well.

Edited to add a link and I realized there were more than those two I mentioned.

Budweiser? I really hate the beer and would be very wary about trying their sauce. Guinness would be another story altogether. Good beer, good sauce. Bad beer, well...

Here is another vote for Sweet Baby Rays. I like my BBQ sauce a little sweet also. Nothing like S.B.R. on babyback ribs.

I too have always been a fan of SBR's, but over the 4th while looking at the BBQ sauces at Wal-Mart, a lady asked me if I had tried Cattleman's. I said no that I hadn't and she suggested that I do. She said they love it and her daughters uses it as a dip. I choose the Honey BBQ and we slathered it on our chicken at the cookout. It was great. Everyone at the cookout raved on it. It was very inexpensive too. Has any one else here tried it and what are you thoughts?

I like SBR's as well but have been known to buy Cattleman's by the gallon, the regular. In fact Cattleman's is all I used for years. I like because it's not too, too sweet. Another brand(wondering if it's available elsewhere?)is "Pat's Ho Made"(by BF cracks up at the title)is also inexpensive and not overly sweet. Not sure where it's manufactured.

I have a variety of different BBQ sauces in the fridge. Cattleman's is one of them. I guess they were on sale and I went for it. There is a store nearby called Ocean State Job Lots which carries many overstock items but have a interesting variety of foodstuffs. I am always picking up some sauce that is under the $2.00 range and pleasantly surprised.

I guess my appreciation for Cattleman's is that it comes in large one gallon containers which was being used at some of the restaurants I worked at. I liked that it was thick and rich.
Do not be surprised if you were to scurry through the trash at a lesser restaurant and find a container of Cattleman's in the there.
I cannot believe that the restaurant that I am currently working at uses Pitt's brand. That stuff barely makes it in the dollar aisle in the grocery store, it is pure garbage. Don't try our ribs either...

Speaking of "gud sauce" I have a recipe for what we consider one of the BEST sauces ever on BBQ pork.

This sauce is outstanding on North Carolina “Pulled Pork” sandwiches, but works great on Arkansas pork as well. There is also a Western North Carolina variety which includes catsup, but for my money this is the best barbecue sandwich in all the South (and on the planet, for that matter).

                        3/4 cup distilled white vinegar
2 Tbs Louisiana hot sauce (Crystal® Brand recommended - made in New Orleans)
                        1 Tbs brown sugar
                        1 Tbs regular granulated sugar
1 Tbs kosher salt (Morton® “Coarse Kosher Salt” recommended)
1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (use 2 teaspoons if you’re adventurous)
1 tsp fresh-ground black pepper (coarse grind)
                        1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper

                        Whisk ingredients well.

Heat to a simmer in a non-reactive pan (to combine flavors and thoroughly dissolve sugars).

Remove from heat, let cool, and place in a shaker bottle (see C's otes). Keeps for months in the refrigerator.

Add to roasted, chopped, or pulled pork to taste. Always shake well before using.

                        C's Notes:

•Get yourself an empty Crystal® Louisiana Hot Sauce bottle (12-ounce size) and use it for storing this sauce. You can pop off the plastic cap to fill the bottle (use a kitchen funnel), and then replace the cap which provides the perfect size “hole” for dispensing the sauce. Hey!! Recycle!!

•If you love pulled pork sandwiches as much as my wife and I do, you may want to whip up a “double batch.” The 12-ounce bottle will hold it handily.

I believe Cattlemens used to only be sold to food service outlets until WalMart picked it up. Pretty tasty. I'm seeing it at other places now too.

I think it's pretty good, and the ingedients are simple. It also makes a good base for creating your own 'custom' sauce because of that.

Although if you check the ingredients the sauce contains msg.

I agree with the folks that like Sweet Baby Rays. Its sweet, which I don't normally go for, but I just really like it. I like to crank up the heat a little bit with a drop or two of an extract- based hot sauce(heats it up without changing the flavor)

Another one I really enjoy is Bone Suckin' Sauce. Not nearly as sweet, actually not really sweet at all. Its totally different from Sweet Baby Rays. A lot of grocery stores carry it now (in FL and CT, at least)

                                http://www.bonesuckin.com/

I wasn't overly impressed with Stubbs. Its OK, not bad IMHO. Nice packaging...

Rusty246 caught my eye when he mentioned Pat's Ho-Made BBQ Sauce. My family and I think it's the best - hands down! It is similiar to the sauce served at Sonny's Real-Pit BBQ - but better. I would buy it at Publix supermarkets when I lived in Florida, but alas I can't find it here in Texas. Desperate for its perfectly spiced, not too sweet taste, I googled it and found it can be purchased through Palmetto Canning Co. (www.palmettocanning.com). It's made in Palmetto, Florida.
