I am interested in a recipe for some deep fried green beans. I have seen them a few times in a comercial and they look delicious.

We had deep fried calamari and vegetables at a restaurant and my husband loved it, so when we got home, I experimented for a few hours, and this is what I came up with. It can be used as a base batter recipe for deep fried calamari and vegetables, shrimp alone or with veggies, chicken, broccoli, you name it. It's versatile and delicious! I'm writing it as though it's for just veggies. The ingredients listed is enough for 1-1 1/2 pounds of meat, veggies, or a combination of both. Substitute principle ingredient as you wish.

    6-8 servings 13 min 5 min prep
    1 1/2 lbs vegetables
    1 cup unsifted white flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon white pepper
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon paprika (Hungarian is best)
    1/2 teaspoon ground rosemary
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 beaten egg
    1 cup milk (room temperature)
2 cups oil, to deep fry (there will be oil left when you are done)
Preheat oil in large, thick bottom pot or fryer, on medium-high heat.
Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl, add liquids, and carefully stir together.
Dip veggies into batter and drop into hot oil, cooking until golden brown.
Remove and allow to drain over paper towel-covered plate, then serve while hot.

I recently had them and they were great! Many choices for a dipping sauce or just dust with grated cheese or lemon juice.

I would imagine a tempura batter located in the Oriental section of the grocery store would be just great..

Just to stick my 2 cents in.
Personally, I dont like ANY veggie fried.
            (exception.. french fries)
I like them steamed and crispy.
I like to taste the veggie, and not be covered up with a batter and grease.

You should try deep fried button mushrooms!

I just came across another recipe where you cook the fresh beans in stock, will give some flavor I am sure. Thanks for all your suggestions. I am going to try this and see how they turn out.

                Green Beans

                1 egg, beaten
                1 cup milk
4 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
                6-8 ounces fresh green beans
                1 cup flour
1 cup plain breadcrumbs or seasoned dry bread crumbs
                3/4 teaspoon salt
                1/4 teaspoon onion powder
                1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
vegetable shortening, for frying or vegetable oil

Place beans in the broth. Bring to a boil and cook 15 minutes, then place in cold water to stop cooking process.

Deep fried green beans... Not for me. In fact, it sounds rather silly except as part of a tempura fest. As an appetizer alone, nada. There are too many other things out there that are just waiting to be fried.

I am a firm believer that veggies should be eaten raw or steamed.

                            Would that include red cabbage?

May I suggest asparagus sauteed In olive oil with some sliced garlic, finished with one beaten egg that's added just when the spears get tender or grilled on the barbie? I find either way to be much tastier than steamed.

I recently had asparagus apps at a local chain prepared in much the same way as the beans that are the subj of the orig post. They were the best part of an otherwise average meal.

Personally, I don't get the point of deep frying normally healthy food. Especially green beans! Then again I don't care for deep fried Twinkies, candy bars, or other strange State Fair-esque concoctions. Plus I can't imagine the funny mix of textures and tastes that would come from deep fried green beans. For those of you who love them, what is the attraction?

A now-defunct "red sauce" Italian restaurant in Indianapolis called "The Italian Village" used to have very-lightly-battered and fried carrot strips.  They were absolutely delicious, and not at all greasy.

Season some Panko with Old Bay, eggwash your beans, dredge in the panko, fry till crispy, have a little Soy Sauce or Teriyaki sauce for dipping!

I tried fried green beans the other night and they were great. I bought a brand (I can't remember what band) and Target and they were coated in an onion flavored batter. We really enjoyed them. I dipped mine in honey mustard. I will definitely buy them again.

I used to grab a handfull at a Chinese Buffet in Middletow.  They made them year round.  They used long straight green beans that were dipped in a tempura and deep fried.  Sweet and tender, great with the Wassabi.

The brand of fried green beans I mentioned earlier were the Archer brand sold at Target. I bought two boxes the other day and they were on sale for abour $2.50 a box.

If you get a change to try these you won't be disappointed. They are very crispy and the batter is light and not heavy.
