Dennis Pharmacy/Key West, FL

I was looking around Hollyeats under Eateries Gone By and I was surprised to see that they had the Dennis Pharmacy Lunch Counter in Key West, Florida listed. I hadn't heard anything about it closing. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I was last there in September of 2005 and had a really good breakfast.

Unfortunately, this is true. The diner part of the pharmacy has closed and the pharmacy has moved over by K-Mart.

I used to stay at the motel across the street and we would run over there to get "take out" for our lunch around the pool almost everyday.
They made the world's best egg salad sandwiches. Their Cuban food was terrific, too. I never did have one of their hamburgers which Jimmy Buffet is supposed to have eaten and which inspired him to write "Cheeseburger in Paradise."

    That is truly sad.

Oh well, yet another reason not to visit Key West.

Displaced by... K-Mart? That really sucks. What a loss to Roadfood.

I noticed that the Dennis Pharmacy, a.k.a. Conch Cupboard Luncheonette still has its review listed. I assume that once a place closes, the review should be pulled.

I have heard of several restaurants that claim to be the inspiration of cheeseburger in paradise, in places ranging from Mobile, AL to Gainesville, FL to St. Barts.

Hi....we were in Key West just this past november and it was closed. When I asked the locals they said they were putting a bank there. Luckily I had already bought a key west poster the year before.

The latest news is that they've re-opened in Bahama Village at The Art of Baking with Henrietta. I wonder if the Cheeseburger is still $2.95.

I'm a new poster who lives and eats in the Florida Keys. I'll be looking for posts about our island food and hope to contribute.

The good news: Yes, the original cooks from the Conch Cupboard luncheonette at Dennis Pharmacy have opened in Bahama Village within The Art of Baking with Henrietta, located at 316 Petronia Street. The menu is nearly exactly the same. I ate lunch there today and was very happy. Other locals have been consistently pleased. Oh, the lima bean soup!

Bad news: The Cheeseburger is now $3.50.

We were there the day the news broke that the counter at the Dennis would be closing. They were so busy they ran out of cheeseburger buns. So we had it on toast. Still, pretty darn good. Nice people too, glad to see they've just moved to somewhere else.

The Keys have had a tough time since the hurricane hit---Cole's Peace relocated, and Chicharrone's (sp?) closed too.

Pardon my ignorance, but does this mean that they moved away from Bahama Village (within The Art of Baking with Henrietta) and have their own building now? I admit to being a little confused.

Either way, I look forward to hearing what you think of the place!

The Cooks Of Dennis Pharmacy Luncheonette joined forces with The Art of Baking by Henrietta at 316 Petronia originally. Later Henrietta's moved and now the cooks have the entire location to themselves.

I'm going to the Keys this weekend and would like to know about some new lunch places. We already been many places like Key's Fishery, PePe's,Conch Republic, Hogfish Bar & Grill, and Margaritaville. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to try Conch Cupboard and I've always stayed away from Blue Heaven because I've heard the lines are long. Also, it's gotta have a view.

And does anyone know what happened to The Art of Baking by Henrietta? We were there in April and went to the Petronia location and were told by the staff that Henrietta's was gone and they did not have any further information. They were actually a little rude about it so we went somewhere else to eat lunch.

I haven't seen any mention of my favorite place for coffee - Sandy's Cafe on White St. Great cafe con leche, buccis, and cuban sandwiches. It's just a walk up window/counter with a laundrymat behind it, but trust me, it's worth it.

Thanks for the advice, my husband loves cuban sandwiches so that may be our place. I am not a frequent coffee drinker but at Sarabeth's on they have a wonderful coffee. The aroma made me try the coffee and by the time I got home to Hollywood I called the owner to find out the name, although I still can't find it up here. Also, the owner is a very nice gentleman and runs a beautiful restaurant with a fine eye to every detail of the food, service, and decor.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I looked through all of the websites you offered and I think Crabby Dick's might be our place. We have two children and I get the impression that the other two might be too involved for their attention span. What do you think of Blue Heaven? I've been to Pepe's many times and I love their chipped beef in toast(never seen it on any menu before.) Also, I love Sarabeth's, they have an awesome key west shrimp omelet.

    Mary913,

Blue Heaven is cool. Eating outside with the chickens and the tire swing and the chicken graveyard. The kids might enjoy it. Our daughter hated the menu and the 'tude ruined the meal... When the waited asked if we needed anything else, I think I asked for a gun. We left her at the house when we went to Louie's backyard.

B.O.'s was a great, true roadfood experience. There's something special about great food and the fear of your surroundings collapsing in on you at the same time.

I also enjoyed Lulu's Kiss, which if I remember is on Flagler. I believe it's an old gas station. Burgers, fries, shakes, etc.
