Denny's, Friendly's, IHOP's and American Diners ?

I was wondering how Denny's, Friendly's, IHOP and the majority of American Diners make their Grilled/Melt Sandwiches (Like their BLT'S & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches) Do they just add butter/margarine to the bread & griddle or do they also brush the bread with egg and butter/margarine ???

Years ago at hojo's we buttered the grill and placed a heavy pan lid over the sammich...

I wonder if that's how the rest of these places do it too ? I thought they gave the bread a light egg "wash" and then also buttered the grill/griddle ! I really thought there was egg involved... LoL :0)

The addition of egg to the bread makes it sound more like a Monte Cristo sandwich. Is it possible that you are thinking of this more fancy cousin of the ordinary grilled cheese sandwich?

The sandwiches that Ted is talking about make for a pretty decent breakfast. Denny's was a popular choice when traveling with my grandparents, and I've had one of these on several occasions. Don't know about the preparation method, but it seems like it would be a simple enough experiment.

Perhaps Monte Cristo sandwiches are deep-fried in other parts of the country, but in NJ diners (about as "Roadfoody" as you can get), they consist of French Toast, with cheese and ham between the slices of the egg-soaked bread. The sandwich is then cooked on the griddle, just as a regular grilled cheese sandwich (or French Toast) would be. I think that if a piece of French Toast was deep-fried, it would become as hard as a rock--however, I am not about to try this experiment.

Tedbear, you only have to try your local Burger King to see what deep fried French Toast tastes like.

Any Monte Cristo that I have ever had was deep fried, but Ham and Cheese between pieces of french toast sounds really damn good.

I know I'm going to get @#*$ for mentioning a chain but of all places, Bennigan's used to make a tasty Monte Cristo. On the subject of grilled cheese, I used to work at a now defunct chain restaurant in Colorado. We dipped a brush in a fake butter product and brushed the bread with it. I couldn't tell you what the product was, however, our grilled cheese sandwiches were some of the best in town.

all the Monte Christo's i've ever had were pan fried inn clarified butter---and you sure in heck wont get that in Dennys!

It was a butter-flavored product that we used on our short-lived, but tasty, pan pizzas when I worked at Godfathers.
