Des Moines steakhouses

Over Easter weekend, I am going to be in the Des Moines area. I only have time to eat at one of these three steakhouses....Jesse's Embers, Iowa Beef Steakhouse or 801 Steak & Chop House. Any opinions on which one I should make a priority?

We have enjoyed out steaks (and Pork Chops) at the Iowa BeefSteakHouse 3 times since reading about it in one of Stern's earlier editions of "ROADFOOD". Our last visit about 5 years ago was not as good as the others...not because of the food, but rather that the place was looking pretty run-down at that point. Carpet Worn, Furniture rather battered. If they have spiffed up a bit (unknown at this point), the 'cook your own' steak activity is a good one (You get to select your own steak from a large meat locker). When we first visited the place that 'cook your own on a large grill' was a real novel idea. These days it is much more commonplace so you may not want to get involved with that.

I would rate Jesse's Embers a 7 out of 10. Very good but not great. I haven't tried the others.

    Mr. Mayor & Hillbilly-
Thanks for the responses. I decided to go with Jesse's Embers, since that is reviewed in the latest Roadfood book and here on the website. I'm hoping I might be able to find time to go to two of them.

If you do get to the Iowa Beef Steak House do an update for us will you please. The Steaks and giant Pork Chops were really good...It was the appearance of the place going downhill over the years that disappointed us . I would be interested in learning whether they had improved or continued the slide????
    Thanks

    Mr. Mayor-
Sorry to say I didn't make it to Iowa Beef & Steakhouse. Since the other two have appeared in more recent Stern books, I went with them. Next time I'm in Iowa I plan on trying it, although you will probably beat me there by then.

No problem for me, my friend. However when we pass thru Iowa next time I will be timing our dinner stop for Archies up in La mars. I can't get the picture of that wonderful beef out of my mind. See the review on this site for the photo I have in my mind's eye!

    Mr. Mayor-
Over Memorial Day weekend, I will be flying in and out of Omaha. Other than the Bohemian Cafe, Archie's Waeside in Le Mars, Iowa is at the top of my must eat list. If you do beat me there, let me know what you think.

Must be 20 years since we were in Des Moines for a convention. During the day we were out and about, and solicited recs from locals re who had the best steaks in town. Jesse's Embers name came up more than once, so we went there. The steaks were magnificent--we went back the next night, and it was just as good. To this day, our experience at Jesse's is the benchmark for the quality of any steak we have.
