Desparate times..

Have you ever gone to extreme lengths to get a certain food you crave? When I moved to Sac, I missed Rick's Rather Rich Ice Cream in Palo Alto, CA. The Carob N' Honey flavor in particular which has no match anywhere, as far as I know. I went down there last month and one visit was not enough. I scrambled to find some dry ice and ended up bringing 4 pints home with me on the train in an insulated Trader Joe's zip up bag. I also carried a pizza from my old favorite place, and some Chinese food. The Chinese didn't hold up that well but c'est la vie, I tried.

I think it was in the 70's. A girlfriend and myself dove my Dad's station wagon from Los Angeles to the Ontario Speedway to attend the Ontario 500 race. We were going to sleep in the back of the car in the parking lot. It was a big tail gaiting party of which we wanted to take part. We did our barbecue, ate and found we had the rest of the evening to entertain ourselves. It was boring! So... We drove from there to Palm Springs to have a hot fudge sundae at Wil Wright's. They made one of the finest. It wasn't a horribly far drive, but the problem was I couldn't keep my eyes open driving back to the race track.

I was born in NYC and raised in Yonkers. Since 1970 or so I have lived in SC, AL and OH. I get back to NY rarely nowadays. I grew up on NY style pizza and NY Jewish Crusty Chewy Jewish Rye and crusty chewy Italian and French bread and great German Potato Salad and since I have been away from NY I have missed eating these foods and many others the way they were back there and then. I have gone to untold lengths to find comparable food in other parts of the country but most always they fall far short of the mark. But I guess at least it helps keep the weight down.

Hey Rainyday6, try moving from Calif. to WV. Then see what all foods you miss. Fresh tortillias and homemade tamales have been some of the worst.

I was at the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado with my boyfriend after having road tripped there from Southwest Florida. We were having a very nice time camping and enjoying the area. We were going to head home in about 4 days when instead we decided to leave early, cut across the country to Indiana in order to have fried chicken and fried biscuits at Huber's Restaurant.
