Detroit - Buddy's Pizza Sun, 10/14/07 5:37 AM (permalink)
Anyone know where I can find the recipe for Buddy's Pizza, or a good copycat? Thanks!

Don't know about the recipe...but I loved the pizza on my frequent business trips to the area in the 90's. Is the chain still in business, bigger or smaller, quality the same?

I am formerly from the Detroit area...and ohhh how I miss Buddys pizza!! They are still around, but my relatives that live in the area say that they are a bit pricey! No idea on the recipe......I tried years ago to find a copy cat one, to no avail!! Lindsey in da U.P.

        ChiTown,

        Buddy's has a Web site: http://www.buddyspizza.com

Apparently, they've expanded quite nicely; when I left Detroit, there was only the original restaurant, on Six Mile Rd. Of course, that was 30 years ago.

Someone posted a recipe for Shield's pizza, which I remember being similar to Buddy's, here:

        http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,3783.0.html

If you need instant gratification, here is the menu page, with a couple of photos of Buddy's pizzas:

I am not confident of the recipeauthenticity because of the instruction to "form in circles." Unless Shield's has changed, Shield's pizza, like Buddy's, is square (okay, rectangular ...). I'll give it a try, though.

Try Louies as well. They used to have their original location around the corner from the original Buddy's . However, I'm not sure where they're at now.

Anyway, as a Detroiter, I'm telling you it would be best if you go to the Original Buddy's (which is still on Six Mile/McNichols and Conant). That's where you will find the real Buddy's Pizza. Shield's is now getting ready to move into Downtown Detroit inside the Kales building. They're also fairly good and original.
