Did a kids softball tourney this weekend. Mon, 07/28/08 5:59 PM (permalink)
Fell into an amazing deal this weekend! Seems the health dept shut down the snack bar at this local softball feild (a nasty place with next to no selection, but plenty of crap to sell) and the dorector of the feild came and found me asking if I could bring my truck and fill in for the weekend for free; no rent no percentage and I could plug up to their power; just help him out of a bind. Ive never done a sports event before but being the greedy bastard I am said sure.

Went home and stocked the truck like a small event picked up some help and went to the field.

The faces of the people were priceless when they saw they could get real quality food instead of the steamed to point of shriveled dogs and luke warm sodas they were used to getting. Made me really feel good to hear all the compliments and repeat after repeat customers. Had a line the entire time.

Director asked me to come back sat and sunday also. Did my now infamous wings and thought they were going to riot! Again an endless line. Had to call in more help and send for more food.

Im not sure how many people actually watched the game.

heres the money totals;

friday 5 to 10pm 681.00
saturday 11am to 9pm 1420.00
sunday 1pm to 6pm 620.00

sure I was dead sunday night, but feeling good about all the new freinds and customers I made. Many asked where I would be during the week and said they would see me there. They did and my total for today was about 175.00 more than usual.

Director of the feild came to see me today also and thanked me like crazy, he is thinking it might be easier and cheaper for him to have me there when they have an event rather than going thru the trouble of bringing the snack bar up to code, plus he wouldnt have to worry about insurance or workmans comp etc.

They do something like this at least once a month and its real tempting especially if I build the second truck I am thinking about.

whew, I need some sleep.

That's great. What kind of setup do you serve out of? Seems like you have a lot of capabilities.

Congratulations! The ball park near me just got their first stand. I missed it short of a couple of months; I would have asked to park there.

I have the concessions contracts at two ballparks, and when they aren't being used I take my cart out to a number of other parks where baseball, softball, or football is being played. I can't believe more vendors arent on to this whole area. I have made a killing on some days when I thought things would just be pretty good. My best day was 3400, but I also sell Hawaiin Ice, and that is almost like free money. That was at a park with 8 fields, with two other people working for me. Keep the drinks really really cold, you can't have too much ice. I even use the salt water trick to make the drinks even colder. Keep a cool-down cooler filled with ice water next to the main one so you won't be searching for coldies. Make lots of dogs, charge at least two bucks. Gatorade, Gatorade!! Keep this gig going if you can, I have done numerous after-season parties, met great contacts, and I am now the go-to guy for several municipalities when it comes to vending opps. I make way more even on an easy Sat afternoon with 2 ball fields than I do downtown from 10:30 to 2:30 during the week. Keep em happy and give the director free stuff!

eddiebees = This place does softball, baseball, soccer etc. and if the fans at these other events are as rabid for good food as this past weekend, ITS A GOLD MINE!

I do worry about it cutting into what Ive already got established and dont really want to work 7 days every week.

          decisions decisions . . . .

Sounds like you just fell into a sweet gig. If you did just that gig 50 weeks/year, then you would gross around 136k yearly - assuming your numbers were gross and not net. If they're net, then that's even sweeter.

net for the weekend = just about 2100.

But I actually had a ball and still saw more new customers from it today! Most of them wanted to know if I was going to be regular there. Added about 150 to my total for today.

                making it while I can.

GOTTA GO GET THAT OTHER TRUCK AND GET IT SET UP ASAP.....
