Dietz & Watson questions Mon, 10/31/05 4:18 PM (permalink)
I just learned that a local supermarket in our area is now carrying Dietz & Watson products - including their packaged all-beef franks.

Couple of questions for those familiar with their products:

- What are the going opinions of their all-beef dogs?

- How do their deli meats and other products stack up against Boar's Head, Thummans, etc?

Thanks for all the help.

Whoever they are, they are advertising heavily at the Food City on Alcoa Highway.

Here's a thought: why don't you buy some, cook 'em up, and try 'em. Then buy some coldcuts, and make some sandwiches.

Then tell us what YOU think.

FWIW, nothing stacks up (nice play on words there, Tn) against Boar's Head.

Echoing Mr. Hoffman's advice, please find thread under Hot Dogs & Sausages specifically dedicated to Mr. Fox's opinion on Things Hot Dogs. He'll give you the skinny. And then of course, Mr. Scalion makes a very valid suggestion, too.

In any case, I await the results, I am sure, with no less enthusiasm than those who anxiously hung on for word of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1812.

Dietz and Watson is out of Philadelphia, and has reached the North Jersey area within the last couple of years. Their deli products compare favorably with Thumann's and Boars Head. I consider these companies the big three when it comes to deli. If you go to a good sub or sandwich shop, chances are the meats come from one or more of the three. I know of an Italian deli that uses all 3. I haven't compared their meats side by side, but within a week I had roast beef from all three. A roast beef sandwich on a bagel. Boars Head. Very good. A roast beef sub from a pizzeria that used Thumann's roast beef. Better. Then a roast beef sandwich at home from Dietz and Watson roast beef. Better still. But that doesn't mean that one is better. It may have been due to how it was cut, or how fresh the roast beef is.

I would buy a particular meat from all 3 at the same place and compare. As for the beef dogs, I like Boars Head the best. Thumann's is good, and Dietz and Watson has a milder spicing. For a beef and pork dog, Thumann's is hands down the best in my opinion.

One other thing. Shop Rite has a house brand called Black Bear. The entire Black Bear line of products is produced by Dietz and Watson. The coldcuts, hot dogs, and everything else is the exact same as Dietz and Watson, but with a different name. This was confirmed to me by someone from the company as well as someone from Shop Rite. Many times the Black Bear meats are on sale. So you are getting Dietz and Watson at a less expensive price.

I think I saw them at the Hannafords here in Maine...I think there is or used to be Hannafords in North Carolina.. not sure....

Also, Grote & Weigle Hot Dogs.. (I think thats the spelling)--
                Whats the take on those?
And, I also saw some Brats that are soaked in IPA "beer" there also.. That sounded really good!
They have Jordans also.. Hannafords has quite a selection of weiners..

Thanks for all of the responses.

We bought some of their dogs a few days back and grilled them up two nights ago. We enjoyed them very much. They smelled great on the grill and tasted wonderful in the roll. We look forward to grilling some more in a few days.

We also tried some of their deli products: geneoa salami, hard salami, coppacolla, priscuitto, mortadella and mozzarella - to make a sub sandwich (along with some roasted peppers, lettuce, oil and herbs) - which was very good, indeed. And last week we tried some of their roasted turkey and their mesquite turkey. Again, very good. Glad to see that this area (Knoxville, TN) is now getting deli products such as Dietz & Watson, Boars Head and Thummans's.

                    Roossy -

Grote & Weigel has been around since 1890.
The company started in Hartford, and now has their facility in Bloomfield CT.

Their natural casing dogs are a very good quality, and are used at the Dawg Haus on East St in New Britain; Augie & Ray's on Main St in East Hartford; Doogie's in Newington; as well as the Galloping Hill Inn in Union NJ.

Doogie's has 3 sizes of dogs ranging up to a 2 footer.

Just tried some D&W as a result of this thread. At $9.99/lb I bought just a little to try it. I didn't ask, but they opened a new package for me. I got the "london broil" roast beef. It was excellent, and not as expensive as it first seemed because it had less (added?) moisture than my usual store brand. It is still a little overpriced in my mind, when I can buy other excellent brands in the 5 to 6 dollar range. BTW D&W has been up here in Massachusetts for a few years. I never bought it there, but Bagel Inn (great boiled NY style) in Holden Ma has carried D&W for some time.

I tried some Dietz & Watson (with casing). I did not like them at all, plus they seemed excessively greasy. Usually, when I fry a hot dog, there is little if any grease left on the pan (assuming the casing doesn't burst). The D&W dogs left as much grease as from frying several pieces of bacon.

On the other hand, I really like Nathan's (with casing, not skinless) and you can't go wrong with Hebrew Natioanal.

I have certainly noticed the difference!

D&W is much more moist and flavorful than any other "cheaper" brand we have gotten in the supermarket delis here in South Jersey.

I must lipsmackingly recommend the Black Pepper Turkey Breast by D&W!

                            Wow!

A little provolone and spicy mustard and you can polish off the pound in no time...
