Diner/Coffee Shop Classics: Best Sandwich poll

I cannot believe that so many people chose BLT's. I have never had a BLT in a restaurant which had nice fresh tomatoes on it. For my taste, a great BLT has to have ripe home-grown tomatoes on it. The only place that I can be certain of that is to have it at home.

I had to choose BLTs (even though I never get them with tomatoes as I can't stand them...mine come with cheese instead) because it was the closest option. I wouldn't order any of those things from a diner, to be honest. Who pays for grilled cheese? I'd have chosen patty melt, or tuna melt, or reuben, but those weren't options.

I couldn't figure it out either. When I think "coffee shop", the first thing that comes to my mind is a club. I'd love to have one right now, too.

For Diners, the only option is an Open-faced Roast Beef or Turkey Sandwich with Gravy & Mashed Potatoes. Second Choice--A Cheeseburger. For Coffee Shops, I guess a Club.

I chose club, but my last visit to a coffee shop was years ago, and I ordered egg salad, which I often did back then.

Hot beef with gravy would have been my choice but I chose BLT because I haven't had a decent one in years.

I love a classic club sandwich, which I define as thinly-sliced freshly roasted turkey (or chicken), bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo (if you must) on three slices of toasted white bread, cut into four triangles, with one of those toothpicks with the cellophane frills on it, stuck into the sandwich quarters. I do not think that cheese belongs on a classic club sandwich, but these days, most places seem to include it. It's not that I don't like cheese (I would have chosen grilled cheese as my second option in the poll) -- just not on a club sandwich. In a restaurant in an airport hotel in Beijing several years ago, their club sandwich included a fried egg, but no cheese.

I chose the classic BLT. I also would have chosen the open faced hot roast beef if it had been on the poll. That being said, I had the best BLT in Palmer, AK. Not a coffee shop but a family owned and operated burger shack. The bacon came from a local processor, the lettuce and tomatoes from the garden in the back of the restaurant. JMHO David O.

I agree, rumaki.Cheese does not belong on a club sandwich, imo.

boyardee65 I also would have chosen the open faced hot roast beef if it had been on the poll. Now I'm craving a roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy! Twenty years ago, I used to go to a place that for lunch on Fridays had a prime rib sandwich with au jus.

I chose BLT, but two places near me have really, really, good BLTs.
