I have a feeling that, once this gets to be the norm, an "automatic service fee" will be added to your check, since, without it, very few customers will take the extra time to punch in a tip on their mobile device, and the bars/restaurants certainly aren't going to want to pay their employees a higher wage.

If an automatic service charge ios not added and the service wasnt horrible one should tip. Period.

Sorry that you misunderstood.  This was a  "tongue in cheek"  title .

Maybe this will make servers more aware of when their customers want their check. The lag between finishing your meal & actually getting out the door is one of my pet peeves.

I'm not sure if this is going to be the most popular opinion around here, but I don't think that this type of technology is geared towards the primary demographic of the bulk of the people who post here.

If I have read the posts of the folks who have commented in this thread, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I am the youngest (or, one of) in the group - and I am nearly 40.

New technology is geared towards people who embrace new technology - younger people.  If you project the use of cell phones into the predictable future, smart phones are going to be almost ubiquitous to people of high school and college ages - people who would absolutely embrace this kind of technology.

I don't see the correlation in suggesting that this technology would preclude someone from tipping.  When NYC mandated that taxi cab drivers would have to install credit card readers in cabs, the cabbies said that people wouldn't tip.  That hasn't happened.  As a matter of fact, most of the "suggested" tips that the card reader offers are usually for MORE than I would have tipped in cash.  There is no way to avoid the pop-up screen that "reminds" you to tip.  If you don't tip, it's not because you forgot or didn't take the extra step to add a tip - it's because you're someone who otherwise wouldn't have tipped.  Why would this app be any different?

TTM, I am defininately not a techie but due to your advice, I bought the HTC and it is far better than my expertise.  I am learning though.  I am in the age group that you described and most of us are not technically oriented and I am one of them but I am trying.

    Paul,

I suspect that you have always been ahead of the curve, technology-wise, relative to your peers.

I think the HTC Evo could probably grill up a decent burger, if I'd let it.  I like that I don't have to carry around a separate GPS when I travel - or even a point-and-shoot camera.  Heck, when I sit at the diner counter, I don't even need to buy a newspaper - I just read the USA Today app.  Amazing what a powerful little tool that thing really is.  I remember when a phone was used to make phone calls!

I think that The Travelin Man, even though he drinks, is correct. Although I don't have a clue as to what he's trying to say. That said -- and not to get all high brow on everyone -- but I believe that the general and appropriate protocols governing the use of portable technology can be condensed to one minute and 45-seconds.

You should hear her when she builds a good head of steam and lets out a 30-minute, profanity-laced tirade against her sister for overcooking the Pasta e Fagioli.

    I don't think that's Mrs. i95.

It could be Lewis Black's younger, hotter sister, though.

I guess I'm in the "tech-savvy" generation (under 40... by a hair), and I'm the IT manager for my company, so I'm somewhat up on new technology to say the least. But, I would never use a smartphone or app to pay a tab. I don't even like using a credit/debit card when at a restaurant, I prefer cash. And I'm not shy about flagging down a server to get my bill paid, so I can't really remember the last time I waited for any undue length of time after a meal... and I certainly don't like to linger long enough for the staff to get irate.

based on that description, seamusD, I'd say you are not the demographic. I'm your age, I'm tewch-savvy, but not the demographic either. The demographic are those who use their phone apps for everything. I wouldn't be surprised to see this become the norm for many.

this has got to be the stupidest thing ive heard so far about smart phone use....
embracing technology is one thing.... completely surrendering to it is another

why dont we just get rid of order taking all together... order your food with the app as well.....

BackAlleyBurger, I realize you are being facetious with your "suggestion", but I am certain it is only a matter of time until this is a reality.  Just as soon as most people own a smart phone, and restaurants realize that they can cut down on their expenses for help by eliminating a majority of their waiters/waitresses (only leaving just enough people to do nothing but run the pre-ordered-by-app food out from the kitchen), I am sure it will become the norm everywhere except the fanciest restaurants.

i also pictured the "hobby shop" railroad that runs around the upper walls as a prototype for getting rid of that last pesky waitress
