Do you need change?

What is the story with waitstaff, when you give them a 50 dollar bill on say a $32.00 tab, ask, do you need change?

No I don't need change, I'm trying to establish a College Scholarship for your kid.

Of course, they are soliciting a larger tip than would be the norm..on a 35.00 meal, I would give them 7.00, unless service was bad.And believe me,having been a waitstaff person counting on tips for a living, you try everything in the book.

I had a guy named Applebees once say "Thanks have a nice day". Never even brought the change back. Just assumed it was all for him, it wasnt much but hey I should be the one that decides the amount. Now that hacked me off. Also, I dont like when it has the tip percentages listed at the bottom of the receipt.

One of my pet peeves. I immediately tell them that "I do now, since you have cut your tip in half with that question". I of course then proceed to leave a normal tip...just want to send a message. The question just strikes me as money grubbing and classless. End of rant.

And yes, I have worked for tips tending bar & waiting tables.

It's a tacky ploy to be greedy and lazy. Unless you are working at a truckstop and your name is Flo, it should never be done. There are times when it is obvious, like when you get 2 twenties and two singles on a $35 tab. In that case you look at the guest square in the eye and say "thank you very much". Payments should be kept confidential, thats what check presenters are for.

It is a tacky ploy. But at the supermarkets they never count back the change to you either, they just dump it in your hand with the receipt and say thank you. Giving back change has changed.

Any server worth their salt knows that question is a tip killer.
Sure, it may work every once in a while with a person too ashamed to answer yes, but you will lose far more often than you gain.

I am a server and I normally pick up the bill and let the customers know I will be right back with their change. This gives them the opportunity to say "It's all set" or thanks. Each check presentation is gamble. As a server your never quite sure with some customers if their done, have a question, just chatting, waiting on you or waiting on the great escape. Please don't be so quick to judge the people who serve you. Most of us can count, a few of us even have degrees and some of us own the places were serving at and if we were that stupid how were we able to get you to spend your hard earned money in our eateries. It is possible the server was busy and noticed you may be in a hurry and did not want you to wait for no reason. Or maybe she was having a bad day and looked down at the money in her hand and felt just as stupid for asking the question as you may have thought she was for asking it. Even people who are trained to work with the fumble words from time to time and what was meant to be "I'll be back with your change" came out as "Would you like your change back".

I am a server, as well, and I always say "I'll be right back with your change", unless it is obvious {with ones and change}, then I will say "Are we all set?".

And then there are customers who completely ignore their server. I hate it when I am really busy, and I say "I'll be right back with your change", with no response at all, and the customer leaves all the change anyway. This kind of thing is what can take the extra time that may hurt my service at another table.

Servers are human beings. We are there to serve you, not be your "servant".

All I know is that if she's cute I give her a little "goose" on the way out the door. Then I do that little gun gesture with my finger and thumb as I make a "clicking" sound with my mouth.

Seriously, people are people, I try not to base what I do on perhaps their lack of experience or good common sense. If the food is good, on time and they keep me in cocktails, a comment at the end isn't going to change anything.

Proper, unobtrusive service never, ever asks ... and always brings back the change... regardless of how small, unless the patron *offers* that it is "all set" (or some such) when picked up to begin with.

I suppose I have mentioned this before, but, I absolutly hate "Do you need change?" I much prefer a server to offer "Be right back with your change".

The one that really got my 'goat' ,so to speak, was the time I had a $15 tab and handed the server a $50 and she said "Do you need change", Now, I could understand if it was in a check presenter, but, this place just laid the check on the table and I handed her the check with a $50 bill on top of it. Did she actually think I was going to say "all set" and give her a $35 tip. Good grief! I wonder if these people who do that feel like a twit when they go to cash you out and see the denomination of the bill. They would do well to either look first or just say "be right back with the change".

Pacman, I bet she didn't know how much your check was, or what size bill you gave here. She should have known both of coarse... and known not to ask such a bad question,...but?/^%@*)
